Song name: Bet that you look good on the dancefloor Performance: Austin City Limits 2013
1. Describe how the following musical elements are being embellished / developed throughout the improvisation:
1a. Rhythm - e.g. use of repetition, syncopation, note durations " Bet that you look good on the dance floor" uses a lot of drum fills in its rhythmic improvisation. Short rapid note duration is used frequently. The chorus has a emphasis on the "on" beat of the rhythm. Repetition is also strongly used 1b. Melody - ascending descending repetition, intervals, scales, modes, shape / stepwise motion and leaps Alex Turner adds a lot of ascending notes in the melody and uses adds a fortepiano pause in when it reaches the last chorus. He also sings in a crescendo and some points. The guitar also follows much of Alex's melody improvisations by adding pauses and becoming louder and stresses certain notes.
1.c Dynamics - crescendo, decrescendo, accent, loud and soft passages During the guitar solo the guitar becomes almost muffled and leaps up the octave which adds contrast from the rest of the bands playing. 1d. Tone clean, processed, articulation The guitar tone is lightly distorted until the solo where it increases in gain to add a messier tone. it also has a slight amount of reverb to add colour to the tone. It has a very noticeable early 70's rock tone much like Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones with a modern edge . Alex's voice is very clean and well articulated but at points he does add a bit of rasp and almost screams at the audience.
2. Identify potential OHS risks or challenges posed by the performance style. More than likely extremely loud and little hearing protection The bass player looks very drugged affected
3. Describe how the musicians interact with the other band members They interact well with each other and seem to share a strong bond of friendship and connection in the music. They all seem to follow Alex's improve well and all work as a single unit.
4. Describe how the musicians communicate with the audience before, between and after performances They start the performance by asking "how are the ladies doing tonight?" which seems to be well received then Alex continues to scream "alright" and start the song. During the performance they seem to move around the stage comfortably and engage the audience by giving them a chance to sing a small section of the song. Afterwards they seem to just smile and start the next song.
5. What cues musical or visual were used to start or end improvised sequences of music? Alex says "alright" to show the songs starting then starts the riff and Alex does a solo at the start and the band seems to follow that to the verse. The rest of cues seem to be purely musical. 6. Describe the use of rhythm, dynamics, texture used by the accompanists whilst the solo is being performed. The rest of the band continue playing the main section of the piece while solos are being played.
