My script version for the thing

Muybridge:
So one of the early pioneers of moving image was Eadward Muybridge who was born april 9
th
1830.
Hes best known for the horse running moving image. in 1872 Eadward Muybridge was hired by a
race horse owner more of a challenge, and it was to capture pictures of a horse to see if the horses
lifted all four legs of the ground while running. a problem Im sure many people lost sleep over.
What was Muybridge to do? He couldnt know when to take the picture that would be impossible
so I like to imagine it went a little bit like this
hmmm if only there was some way to capture multiple images along a race trackI know. I can line
up some camera along the track to take pictures of the horse in full gallop but im not as fast as a
horse how does one take pictures of a running horse. Ill set up twelve cameras set up on a trip wire
and when the horse runs past it will activate the trip wire and take the picture for me
And so along came 1878 the big day. After developing the photographs Muybridge lined the pictures
up and saw that the horse does have all legs of the ground in a full gallop but that wasnt the only
thing he discovered if he copied the images into silhouettes and placed them in his own invention
that he called the Zoopraxiscope then I appeared as if the horse was moving. These 12 images in
motion would go on to inspire the likes of Thomas Edison into making the Kinetoscope. Muybridges
zoopraxiscope was a device the project moving image that pre-dated the flexible film strips used
today.
Edison:
Edisons kinetoscope was an important invention that inspired the likes of the lumiere brothers.
Edison was an avid inventor and had over 1000 patents in America. He also had many patents in
Germany the UK and France. Many of his inventions paved the way for modern technology. Some of
his inventions include the phonograpgh which was an early edition of the gramophone and the
electrical light bulb. He is also well known for creating a system for electrical generation and
distribution. Edison has a lot to be credited for and if it wasnt for many of his inventions we may not
have some of the things we have today.

Lotte Reiniger
Charlotte Reiniger was a German film director with over 40 films under her belt. She was the leading
pioneer of silhouette animation. Some of her most known work being The Adventures of Prince
Achmed and The Magic Flute which included music from Mozart. As a teenager she loved going
to the cinema, especially watching George Mlis for their special effects. Then she was fascinated
with Paul Wegener and attended one of his lectures. She then went to an acting course that
belonged to Wegener and while in the acting course she started drawing silhouettes of her other
class mates which in turn started her on the way to her future career which made her famous for her
animations predating the likes of Walt Disney. Some of her other work includes helping out British
poet Eric Walter White.

Aardman Animations
Founded in 1972 by Peter Lord and David Sproxton and based in Bristol, England their main style is
stop-motion clay animation. They have produced 39 shorts films and 18 TV shows such as morph,
Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the sheep. They have also created feature-length films such as
Flushed away, Wallace and Gromit curse of the were-rabbit and chicken run. Early in their career
they produced shorts for the bbcs show vision on. Aardmans first feature length film was Chicken
run which was co-financed with Dreamworks. It was released in 2000 Aardman and Dreamworks
signed a contract for $250 million that meant Aardman would create 4 additional films in the
estimated next 12 years. In 2005 a serious fire broke out in the Bristol area where Aardmans studio
was based. Many items were damaged in there warehouse such as past projects, awards etc. In 2006
however Dreamworks said they would not be extending the contract and was ended in 2007. In
2007 Aardman signed and then renewed in 2010 a 3 year contract with Sony Pictures Entertainment.
One of their most recent projects was a kickstarter to crowd fund one minute episodes of Morph.

The Brothers Quay
Identical twins. (born june 17th 1947) Based in England and raised in America. Influenced by Eastern
European animators and writers Walerian Borowczyk and Jan Lenica to name few. Many animations
feature puppets and dolls made from organic and in-organic. Their animations are often dark,
surround death and atmospheric. One of their earliest films Nocturna Artificialia (1979). Their most
well-known film Streets of Crocodiles based off the short stories by Bruno Schulz was given critical
acclaim by Terry Gilliam saying One of the top ten best animated films of all time. Critical acclaim
went further when Jonathan Romney put it in the top ten best films of all time. They won the drama
award for set design for their animation The Chairs.

Advertising
Advertising has advanced leaps and bounds in the past few decades. There are many methods of
advertising to the consumer and there are many tricks to convince them to buy a product or watch
the show. Animation can be used for adverts for many uses. For example animations can be used to
show a product in action like an old commercial of plumbing. Advertising has can be hugely
beneficial to a product and their production. For example Aardman created an advert for lurpak in
the 80s. it used stop-motion clay animation to animate the butter as his couldnt be done with the
actual product. This was a creative advert that could appeal to a wide range of people.

Cinema
Cinema has progressed greatly since the early days and animation has also progressed along with it.
Animation films have become much more detailed and high budget feature films like The Boxtrolls
have a much smoother frame rate. Along with stop motion animation there are a bunch of other
animation types that are just as popular at the box office. Flushed away being an example of a
popular computer animated film by aardman, toy story is also a hugely successful animated film. Its
clear that animated films can hold up today against the big blockbuster tittles.
