Today, regular school attendance from bell to bell is an
important factor in school success. Research has
shown a direct correlation between good attendance and
student achievement. We understand and know
students will get sick and/or have doctors
appointments. If this happens we would like for you to
call and report to the office at 851-5200 if your child
will be late or absent. Thanks for helping us make
attendance a priority.

Next week we will be working on reading food labels. Each
child will need their own food label. Please make sure your
childs snack has one or send in an empty wrapper. We will
need these by Monday. Thanks!

Technology Update
Dont forget to visit our class website. Also, you should now
have cards for students to longin to technology at
home. I will be sending more cards home in
the future with other websites students can
use. I will send text updates when I send these
out so you can put them on the ring. As we
have learned more and more this year about
how to use technology to become better readers and writers,
we are getting closer to bringing our own devices to school.
We will be able to start bring devices the week of October 6
th
.
Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the policy which is
located on our classroom website.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Attached you will find a list of the times I have
scheduled so far. If you do not see your childs name
or if that time no longer works, please let me know as
soon as possible. It would be best to give me 2 times
that work for you. Thanks!

Field Trip
Check your childs green homework
folder today for the permission slip.
Please return by 10/3/14.

Looks like we beat the strep throat!
Unfortunately, Henderson Elementary
has not been so lucky with the cases
of head lice. Although it hasnt
made its way to our room, it can spread easily.
Please just be on the lookout for itchy heads.
Thanks!

Units of Study

Unit 1: We the students
We will begin this unit by talking about
rights and responsibilities. This will help us to
set the expectations and rules for our
classroom. Later, we will extend this
conversation to our country. We will discuss how
rights and responsibilities help shape our
communities. We will learn about important
documents such as the Declaration of
Independence and the Constitution. Finally, we
will explore how the three branches of our
government work and end the unit with a fun
project on the three branches to show what we
learned.
Additionally in this unit we will emphasize
reading skills like asking important thick
questions while reading, discussing a characters
traits and motivations, and using text features.
We will also highlight essential writing skills
such as using the steps of the writing process
and conducting research.

Unit 2: Eat This and Not That
We will start this unit mid-September.
In this unit, students will investigate the six
essential nutrients (water, vitamins, minerals,
carbohydrates, fats, and proteins). We will work
together to establish healthy food choices as
they learn how to read and compare nutrition
labels.
Additionally in this unit we will emphasize
how to find the main idea while reading, how to
compare and contrast, and how to express our
informed opinions to others in writing.
