Announcing the acceptance by the Reverend Mary Siegmund to the
calling of Priest-In-Charge to St. Lukes

First Service to be on St. Lukes Sunday, October 19

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

To the Congregation of Saint Lukes Church, a
message from our Bishop and an announcement of
our new Priest-in-charge.

Dear Friends,

Thanks be to God!!!!! I have
never been so proud of a
Search Committee and a
Vestry!

Grace & Peace,
+Dean

The Right Reverend Dean
E. Wolfe
Ninth Bishop
The Episcopal Diocese of Kansas

St Lukes is proud to announce that our Priest-in-
charge is the Reverend Mary K. Siegmund.
She is currently the Priest-in-charge at St Matthews
Episcopal Church in Newton, KS and has served
there since March 2010. From March 2006
November 2009 she served as the Canon to the
Ordinary, Episcopal Diocese of Kansas, Topeka, KS.
In August, 2001 until February 2006 she was the
Assistant Rector at Church of the Good Shepherd,
Nashua, NH. In addition she was Vicar from June
1998 June 2001 at St. Johns Northland, Kansas
City, MO.
Mary and her husband live in Lenexa. They have two
adult children and two dogs. She has broad
experiences as a priest from parish ministry in small
and large parishes to diocesan ministry. Her greatest
attribute is the ability to listen to people in complicated
situations and to lead Gods people to a new place of
joy.
Marys current parish still needs her assistance. So
we are working with the Bishop to have her begin
part-time at St Lukes on September 18 two days a
week and Full-time at St Lukes effective on October
16
th
. Her first Sunday Service will be on St. Lukes
Sunday, October 19
th
.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact
me at tschrempp@kc.surewest.net or (913) 461-5502
or contact Steve Mann at stmann48@gmail.com (913)

Gods peace to you,
Tom Schrempp

Blessing of the Animals at St Lukes October 5

Anglican churches hold ceremonies

Special Thanks to Father Evan Ash
Father Evan has been our Supply Priest for most of the summer
and on October 12
th
will be officiating the last service before
Mother Mary arrives. Please let Father Evan know how much
we appreciate his service to our parish over the last 4
months during coffee hour on the 15
th
. We wish him well in his
future endeavors. Thanks also to Rev. Kelly Demo for her once
a month supply priest support and to Rev. Gar Demo and Rev.
Ben Varnum for providing us pastoral support.

Senior Wardens Thoughts
October Senior Wardens Thoughts
A year ago Bob Mossman was
welcoming our interim Rector,
Father John Goddard to St. Lukes in
this column. This October we are
anxiously awaiting the first service by our new
Priest In Charge, Mother Mary Siegmund, on
October 19
th
, St. Lukes Sunday. This is a case of
history repeating itself as Father Jim Cook also
made his debut service at St. Lukes on St. Lukes
Sunday. Mother Mary has been coming in part
time on Thursdays and Fridays to speed the
transition. She, Steve Mann
and I are starting interviews
for the parish secretary. She
is working with the Youth
Minister Search Team to bring
on board a new Youth
Minister.

Gods Blessings are shining
down upon us!

From the September 12 Vestry meeting:
Mother Mary Siegmund attend the meeting
and facilitated a discussion of how to make
the most of her first 90 days.
Ratified the expenditure of over $13,000 for
the repair of the basement after it flooded
in July. Except for a $500 deductible, all
costs were covered by insurance.
The Endowment Fund has grown $12,895
Year To Date.
The financial reports shows a pledge
revenue shortfall of $12,642, but net
income was $ 20,707 ahead due to saving in
several areas minimal search expenses, a
longer period with the priest position and
youth minister open.
The Stewardship committee has been
taking a Time, Talent and Treasure
approach and encouraged gratitude for
those who serve the parish.

Endowment Fund News

Your
Endowment
Fund Board
would like you
to join the
Celebration!
When do we
celebrate? Graduations, Weddings, Births,
Birthdays, Anniversaries, Job Promotions,
Retirements, Royals, Sporting KC and Chiefs
victories, etc.
Endowment Fund Board members and Vestry
members are celebrating these events by
contributing to the St Lukes Endowment Fund.
More than $200 has been added to the basis of
our fund so far this year. These donations were to
honor a job promotion, an anniversary, and
birthdays.
Are you willing to celebrate your joys with St
Lukes?
It is easy. Celebrate by supporting the St Lukes
Endowment Fund. Your donation payable to St
Lukes Endowment Fund will help sustain the
Fund. If you want to share your celebration event,
enter it on the Memo line the event. For example,
enter Wedding Anniversary or Birthday. Your
donations to the Endowment Fund are tax
deductible to the extent authorized by law.
Donation forms are available in the narthex of the
church.
Our goal is to grow the Endowment Fund to help
support and sustain the mission of the Church. We
do this in several ways. One way is through our
investments at Sonus Financial. Another is through
additional contributions from you and your friends.
The main source of our current Endowment is
beneficiary gifts through Life Insurance Policies and
Estates. You can make St Lukes Episcopal
Endowment Fund one of the beneficiaries on your
Life Insurance Policy.
As of August 31st, our Endowment Fund balance is
$225,173. For the first eight months of this year
our Endowment Fund has a $12,895 gain. With
your support the Fund will continue to grow.
Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.

Stephan Mann, Fund Treasurer

Thanks to our Search Committee
The Search Committee began organizing over a year ago in August, 2013.
They put a tremendous amount of time and effort into surveying the parish
community, developing a Parish Profile, interviewing candidates by Skype,
interviewing 2 candidates in person and then prayerfully recommending to the Vestry
to extend a calling to Mother Mary Siegmund. Please let them know your appreciation
for their hard work on behalf of our Parish. Our diocesan support of the process
including Bishop Dean Wolfe, interim Canon Megan Froelich and, particularly, Dave
Siefert, Missioner for Transitions, deserves our thanks also as they have done much to
support the process.

Origins of the Pentecost Banner in the Nave
Many of you have asked where the Pentecost Banner came
from and what it means.
Notes on the Pentecost Banner (made in 2009)
The basis of the banner was the Pentecost story, when the
Holy Spirit descended on Jesus disciples and friends. There
are several vigorous whirlwinds on the banner, and it is safe
to assume that any figure topped off with yellow, orange, or
red above its head is receiving the Holy Spirit. Notice also
the many doves representing the Holy Spirit. (a difficult-to-
see detail of the flaming house is a doorbellthe artist felt
hospitality was an attribute to the early apostles). In
another highlight, the instructors neglected to explain to the
artist that what he had originally drawn as a skateboard, but
amended to a more historically accurate chariot, then
lacked a source of motion. In addition to the actual events
of the day of Pentecost, we read and illustrated stories that
appear in the Year B lectionary as lessons during the season
of Pentecost. The figures on green backgrounds show Jesus
healing people (Propers 8, 11, and 18). The figure on the
upper right is Samuel receiving the call of God. In the
middle right pointing upwards is David (Propers 5-15). On
the lower right are Elijah and the Widow (Proper 27). On
the lower left is Hannah (Proper 28). In the middle of the
bottom the artist has represented herself as watching as the
Holy Spirit approaches her. The artists were Henry, Ellis,
Emma, Dakota, Chloe, Owen, and Cheryl, who received
technical supervision from Mikala. Many thanks to them for
sharing their talents.
