Grade Level: 2

Subject: Science

Brief Description of Activity: After introducing water in your classroom students will
go to the website, http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/statematerials.html
where they will discover the different states of water and experiment with various
temperatures to learn about ice, water and steam. After completing the online activity
students will continue to the website,
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/8_9/solid_liquids.shtml where they will
expand their knowledge about changing states of liquids by experimenting with different
materials other than water.

General Learner Outcome: 25 Describe some properties of water and other liquids,
and recognize the importance of water to living and nonliving things.

Specific Learner Outcome: Demonstrate an understanding that liquid water can be
changed to other states:
recognize that on cooling, liquid water freezes into ice and that on heating, it
melts back into liquid water with properties the same as before
recognize that on heating, liquid water may be changed into steam or water
vapor and that this change can be reversed on cooling
identify examples in which water is changed from one form to another.

ICT Outcomes:
C.1.1.2 process information from more than one source to retell what has been
discovered
C.1.2.1 access and retrieve appropriate information from the Internet by using a specific
search path or from given uniform resource locations (URLs)
F.3.1.1 demonstrate courtesy and follow classroom procedures when making
appropriate use of computer technologies
F.3.3.1 use time and resources on the network wisely
P.5.1.2 access hyperlinked sites on an intranet or the Internet

Rationale: Using technology in this activity enhances student motivation and
participation, students have the opportunity to view and interact with the material.
These two resources also allow students to work at their own rate with the ability to go
back and review. Therefore, both these online activities enhance the students
understanding of their learning. Incorporating technology into the lesson provides
students with time to work on their computer skills leading to success in the future.

Search Strategies:
-used descriptive keywords (liquids, changing states, grade 2)
-similar terms (in Google I used ~ to search related words as well)
