THE POWER OF WATER Limited Ed.
Introduction
Water borne diseases are the cause of
death for one in four children globally and
the world needs this to change. Gaining
access to clean water is a genuine
challenge for children in third world
countries, but is easily accessible and even
taken for granted in developed countries.
The quality of drinking-water is an
essential basic need for health and safety.
A guarantee of drinking-water safety is a
base for the prevention and control of
waterborne diseases.

Drama 1
The situation is dramatic in Africa where
people spend 40 billion hours every year
hiking and walking to collect unsafe water.
Women and children have to tolerate the
weight of water collection, walking miles
to the nearest source, which is polluted
and most likely dirty. These troubling
issues exist in under developed countries
such as; Asia, Africa, Latin America and the
Caribbean.

8

Drama 2
Water becomes polluted from humans
and animals disposing of their waste into
clean water supplies. The villages have no
other water source to drink, other than
the dirty and polluted water. This water
sits, unprotected in the boiling hot African
sun and exposed to all sorts of germs and
diseases on the ground. Clean water alone
can reduce water-related deaths by 21%,
sanitation education can reduce water-
related deaths by 37.5% and hand washing
alone can reduce water-related deaths by
37%. Every 20 seconds a child dies from
water related illnesses throughout the
world.

Drama 3
The challenge that children face every day is
the difficulty of collecting fresh and clean
water. They have to walk miles for dirty warm
water which is likely to make family members
or themselves sick, ill and unwell, possibly
leading to death. There are personal stories like
Jean Bosco, the shy 15-year-old who used to
walk hours each day to collect dirty water until
Living Water International constructed a well in
his village. The children at Balkumari Primary
School used to spend recess walking 20
minutes to collect dirty water from a cave.
Now, they spend that time playing with friends.
Also Murama Grade School finally has a tap
stand with clean water. Now that they have
easy access to clean water, their future just got
much brighter.
10

Drama 4
The issue of having access to clean
drinking water is a global problem,
however in parts of Australia there is an
absence of water. Inland Australia
experiences drought where there is a lack
of fresh water for everyone because it
does not rain enough. Limited water is
encountered worldwide by families not
being able to buy or access bottled/tap
water. The differences are one country
might be identified for its lack of water
and receive aid and funding to fix the
problem, whereas other countries might
be overlooked for aid even though they
have a more demanding need for help.

11

Drama 5
Current actions being done to assist
includes starting campaigns, donating
money, sacrificing Birthday gifts and
joining discussions. UNICEF is the world's
leading organisation working for children
and child rights. They operate in more
than 190 countries and work with families,
local communities, business partners and
governments to help every child reach
their full potential. UNICEF is short for
United Nations International Childrens
Emergency Fund.

12

Drama 6
The United Nations Convention on the Rights
of the Child commonly known as the CRC is a
human rights treaty which sets out the civil,
political, economic, social, health and cultural
rights of children. The CRC was created for
children as they didnt have a set of rights to
protect them from all the dangers of life.
Through help given from the CRC, children are
given the opportunity to grow up in a healthy,
safe and cultural environment. It is illegal to
disobey/brake this set of rights but, they are
continually being broken and are still being
broken to this very day. Children have the right
to good quality health care, clean water,
nutritious food and a clean environment so
that they will stay healthy. Richer countries
should help poorer countries achieve this.
13

Drama 7
Around the world, more than 2 million
people die each year from waterborne
diseases. Ninety percent of the victims are
less than five years old. Often the only
source of water for a village is a stream or
river located many miles away, which
results in women and children spending
hours collecting water from rivers and
lakes. As they spend all their time
collecting water they have no time to work
or attend school.

14

Drama 8
Access to clean water in under developed
countries is sadly compromised, but doesnt
reach the quality level of water found in first
world countries. In most developing countries,
the water supplied to households, business and
industry does not meet drinking water
standards, even though only a very small
amount is actually consumed or used in food
preparation. Typical uses include toilet
flushing, washing and landscape irrigation.
Everyone in the world has the responsibility to
provide precious clean drinking water to all the
under developed countries to help them live
safe healthy lives. No children should live with
the fear that the water they drink will make
them sick or even die. Children have the right
to have time to go to school and not have to
spend hours walking to collect unclean water
to drink.

15

Drama 9
Funds are being raised through starting
campaigns, donating money, sacrificing
birthday presents, joining discussions and
buying filtration or purification filters and
tablets. Yay water pumps and filters have
been installed. Good people like Water
for India, Charity water, The water
project, Water.org, World Health
Organisation, Africa Care, Child Fund,
Waves for Water and Drop in the
Bucket and Do Something, are caring for
people that are less lucky to have access
to clean water and also advocating for
childrens rights.

Conclusion
For my health groups action, we will be
teaching the grade 4 classes about our
topics and showing them a few of their
choices for next years exhibition. We will
also show them what they will be inquiring
and researching into with a Prezi
presentation including pictures, a movie,
Bibliography. (Group presentation). My
actions are raising awareness for
worldwide access to clean water. There is
also a note on the bottle I will be handing
out, which lists a website to visit for more
information. This website has this
document which tells you all about access
to clean water. (Self-action).
