Government Intrusion
The United States along with the global community of centralized governments at large
have long tried to intercept the daily communications. The highlight of this issue stands at the
forefront of our society as we have become a digital community. The existence of the internet,
and the many platforms that exist to aid in our daily lives have left us more open to snooping.
The internet was forged as a tool for us all to use to become interconnected though sharing of
information and ideas amongst our peers. We can look at the many security breaches and
government privacy violations that have been exposed in todays world as the downfall of
information sharing.
The level of government intrusion may never be fully known, but its capability to extract
data from the vast databases has become a reality. The United States through it information
gathering departments like the NSA (National Security Agency) can reach our home and mobile
computing platforms. The NSA is agency that can be hailed for it great work in preventing or
intercepting threats from around the world. The question we must ask ourselves today is, what
rights as citizens of a county are we there in protecting our internet usage. In an article posted by
CNN this question of government intrusion is highlighted. The article titled "Yahoo wins in
battle of secretive surveillance was written to highlight the governments continued fight to
retrieve information from private company that could expose U.S. citizens private data. The
2

company has fought a battle since 2008 to prevent the government from being able to access
private records from it servers.
This battle at heart was can be echoed from many tech company that we use today. From
emails that we send to searches that we do for everyday life. The government want to be able to
deep dive into information that they find useful. The government was exposed recently by
Edward Snowden in it attempts to gather data on international targets that also exposed countless
Americans to cyber monitoring. CBS news highlights that some 60,000 or more citizens and all
of their information became subject to government review. The government has tried to explain
that the information gathered that was discovered to be U.S. citizen was not further reviewed but
the interception and data logs were recorded and so deep diving was done.
In this project I used google and Bing to conduct searches for articles that had relevant
information. Both search engines seem to deliver article in the same fashion. The articles on
Bing seem to populate faster and with more multimedia components. Google is my preferred
search engine but after using Bing I found it to be quicker to load. Googles ability to cluster
more information on one pages is also a plus. Bing has around 5 articles listed with many more
that can be discovered but only by clicking into additional pages.
My article from CBS news I found to be more informative then the initial article I found
on CNN. The CBS article was written by submitted by the AP (Associated Press) in conjunction
with the Washington Post. Over the years they have been driven to deliver the most accurate and
informative articles and essays on diverse subject matter. The article seems to be written to
inform individuals of current events. The article was submitted on July 6
th
2014. The article
relates directly to the topic of government surveillance that I highlighted in the beginning of this
discussion.

Using the CCBC database ProQuest I was able to find articles that had relevance to the
topic. These articles highlighted the growing concern of people around the country as to what
types of data pooling is acceptable and in what way the date should be used. The questions raised
by these article were if the current administration can handle the great task of bringing in the
open book policies that have been present over the years. The many good use for data pooling
should not out way the rights of any citizen to use the wealth of information available online to
convict them or monitor there doings. Both article were written in the last 2 years. The ease to
using this database was much like google and Bing. All were able to deliver a wealth of data that
was extremely useful.
