ETEC 524: ePortfolio Project

One of the major course projects for ETEC 524: Introduction to Educational Technology is the
course eportfolio. Youll explore the affordances and learning theories related to eportfolios through
assigned readings, a reading discussion, and a technology playtesting activity. The eportfolio you
create, however, should capture and convey what youve learned throughout the coursenot just
youre learning about eportfolios.

You may use whatever software tool or technology that you wish for your eportfolio. Use the
technology playtesting activity on eportfolios to explore your options and make your choice.

The only requirement that we make of you is that you must be able to submit the eportfolio by
sending a link to the portfolio. That is, you cant mail us a CD, flash drive, or other media storage
device with your portfolio materials on it. It must be webbased.

Although we recognize that many approaches to organizing an eportfolio exist, we are going to
dictate (so to speak) how to organize this one. The purpose of this eportfolio is for you to reflect
on what you think, know, and are able to do and build a case (or convince us) that you think it,
know it, and are able to do it. All that were deciding for you is what wed like you to show us that
you think, know, or are able to do. (Were sure that you have many valuable beliefs, knowledge,
and skills beyond those that we need to examine). Thus, your eportfolio should have a section or
page on each of these learning outcomes, which are key outcomes for educational technologists:

PhilosophyDevelop a philosophy of educational technology that shapes your vision reflected in
a variety of areas from the role of technology in current and future personal and professional
settings.
DecisionMakingUtilize best research practices in order to make informed decisions regarding
the effectiveness/impact of technology integration.
CommunicationDemonstrate effective communication, media, information, and technological
literacy skills applicable within current and future personal and professional settings.
TechnologyEffectively design, develop and integrate a variety of technological applications that
are appropriate within current and future personal and professional settings.

Although the above describes the learning that we want you to demonstrate, you have free rein in
deciding what artifacts to collect, select, reflect on, and make connections among. Please include
artifacts from other relevant learning and professional experiences such as courses that you have
taken, from your experiences teaching, from conferences or professional development workshops,
or other experiences that are relevant to the case that you are building.

We will use the evaluation rubric included on the next page to assign grades for your eportfolio.
However, notice that weve grayed out the highest levels of attainment. Thats because this rubric
is used to evaluate the eportfolio that students in the ETEC masters submit at the end of their
coursework. Thus, the highest levels of attainment describe the quality of work expected of those
nearing completion of their degree. An acceptable (or passing) level of attainment in this course is a
2 on each of the criteria (or an overall score of 8). Your eportfolio may well merit scores higher
than 2s and will be assigned higher levels if they do. In short, you only need an 8 to get an A, but if
you earn a 16, well give it to you.
