A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN
ENG 111 - ENGLISH FOR STUDY AND THINKING SKILLS
Prepared by: Shiela Marie Czarina L. Dionisio, BTTE IV-E

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
A. General Objective
1. understand how to compare and contrast.

B. Specific Objectives
1. differentiate comparison and contrast;
2. identify the signal words used in the selection;
3. realize how comparing and contrasting can help them in their field of study and in their
daily lives; and
4. compare and contrast two things using Venn diagram.

IV. PROCEDURE
A. Preparation
1. Greetings
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Review of the previous lesson
4. Motivation
Have the students choose and explain their answers on the following questions:
Would you rather be able to fly or turn invisible?
Would you rather have many friends but no close friends or have just one or
two close friends?
Would you rather be able to control the time or control people?

To compare means to tell
how two or more persons,
places, or things are alike;
to contrast means to tell
how two or more persons,
places, or things are
different.

Words That Signal
Comparison:

alike, equally, in the same
way, likewise, similarity, as,
in a similar fashion, just as,
resemble, similarly, as well
as, in a similar way, just like,

Hand-outs
Listen carefully to the
dialogues. Answer the
following questions. (10pts.)

1. What is their
discussion all about?

2. What are the two
things being
compared?

3. What are the
similarities of the
two? (3pts.)

4. What are the words
that helped you
identify the
similarities? (5pts.)

Words That Signal Contrast:

although, conversely,
differently, more, on the
other hand, as opposed to,
despite, even though,
most, still, at the same time,
difference, in contrast,
nevertheless, to the
contrary, but, different, in
spite of, on the contrary,
unlike, by contrast,
different from, instead, on
the one hand, yet

Listen carefully to the
dialogues. Answer the
following questions. (12pts.)

1. What is their
discussion all about?

2. What are the two
things being
contrasted?

3. Analogy:
a.
Current:__________
;
Voltage:__________

b. __________: load
operates
dependently;
__________: load
operates
independently

4. What are the words
that helped you
identify the
differences? (3pts.)

5. What is the
difference between
comparing and
contrasting? (3pts)

C. Generalization
1. What do we mean by comparing? By contrasting?
When we compare, we bring out the similarities. When we contrast, we tell the
differences.

2. In what aspects of your life, do you think, can you apply comparing and contrasting?
How?
We make decisions every day. We think of which clothes to wear, where to go,
which is better, what to buy, what to choose. We reflect on our past, present, and
future situation. In all of these, it is essential that we know how to make comparison
and contrast to be able to make a good choice and a wise decision.

D. Practice task
Form groups by row. Have each group think of their original pose.

A. Read the following sentences. If your answer is comparing, you have to sit and
massage each other. If you answer is contrasting, you have to stand and pose.
Each correct answer is equal to 2 points. You will be given 5 seconds to think of
the answer.

1) The main difference between direct current and alternating current is in
how the current flows in each type of circuit. (contrasting--pose)

2) High school and college are both institutions of learning. (comparing--
massage)

3) Most old houses feature craftsmanship that is not found in the average
house built today. (contrasting--pose)

B. Listen and analyze the selection. If your answer is true, you have to sit and
pose. If your answer is false, you have to stand and massage each other. Each
correct answer is equal to 2 points. You will be given 5 seconds to think of the
answer.

Materials that permit free electrons to move easily from one atom to
another are called conductors. Conductors offer very little resistance to
flow of electrons through them. On the one hand, materials through which it is
very difficult to produce a flow of electrons are called insulators. Insulators
have few, if any, free electrons and resist the flow of electrons.

1) Both conductors and insulators have free electrons. Both is a signal
word used to indicate a contrast of idea. (False)

2) Conductors and insulators differ in the way they resist the flow of
electrons. The word that signals contrast is differ. (True)

E. Evaluation
Directions: Examine the two paragraphs then answer the questions that follow.

The MEIJI AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATOR (SVC-1000W) Meiji AVRs are
servo-motor type with 4 universal outlets (3: 220V and 1:110V). It also has a power-on
delay of 5-10 minutes so as to protect the appliance for sudden surges of electricity. It is
used to protect our computers and other appliances (i.e. refrigerators, flat screen TVs)
against surging and fluctuating of electricity by maintaining the load voltage against
wide variances.

Price: Php 2,999.75 at Ace Hardware

The MEIJI AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATOR (SVC-15000W) is a servo-motor
type with 4 universal outlets (3: 220V and 1:110V). It also has a power-on delay of 5-8
minutes so as to protect the appliance for sudden surges of electricity. It is one that is
used to protect our computers and other appliances (i.e. refrigerators, flat screen TVs)
against surging and fluctuating of electricity by maintaining the load voltage against
wide variances.

Price: Php 3,999.75 at Ace Hardware

1) What are the similarities and differences of the two automatic voltage
regulator? Write it using the Venn diagram.

differences

2) The two paragraphs can be summarized into one. Identify the signal words used
and rearrange them accordingly.

Ace Hardware offers two kinds of meiji automatic voltage
regulator. But of these servo-motor type have 3 universal outlets with 220V
and 1 universal outlet with 110V. Both one of the meiji automatic voltage
regulator costs Php 1000.00 higher than the other. This may be because
the cheaper has 1000W with a power-on delay of 5-10minutes similar the other
one has 15000W and a power-on delay of 5-8 minutes. Nonetheless, the two
regulators have while functions: to protect our computers and other appliances
against surging and fluctuating of electricity by maintaining the load voltage
against wide variances.

V. ASSIGNMENT
In 10-15 sentences, compare and contrast two persons who are close to your heart.
Italicized the signal words that you used. Print your answers on a short bond paper. You may
include pictures if possible.
