Assignment 1: Information Literacy.

The article that I chose implements almost all of the potential topics that we had to
choose from. The article that I chose discussed online website based technologies that help
children better understand how to be safe online, along with many other programs that perform
various children related protective actions in collaboration with law enforcement; such as, a way
for people to submit potential child pornography websites/people responsible, report one who is
sexually exploiting children, and report one who is sexually trafficking children. Also, NCMEC
helps law enforcement find missing children and find the culprit guilty of abducting them (when
there is one). The technology is a collaboration between Sprint and the National Center for
Missing & Exploited Children. It is located at www.NSTeens.org. The technology is an internet
safety website that allows people (specifically children and teens) to seek help with various
problems that are seen online. These problems include cyberbullying, online security, and digital
ethics. The programs on this cite are games and teen-friendly videos that help children and teens
learn about internet safety and how to recognize potential online threats and take action. The
programs also teach people how to deal with certain online threats and what actions may be
helpful.
The first search engine that I used was Google. The article that I found was
http://www.bloomberg.com/article/2014-09-09/ajH5KZfAvrUU.html.
The second search engine I chose was Bing. The article that I located on Bing was
http://www.educationworld.com/a_tech/site-review/nsteens.shtml.
In my opinion, for this search, neither website did their job very well. Google gave me
many different articles and pages to choose from, but many of those pages quoted the original
CNN web page that I looked at. Bing gave me many results; but, most of them were relevant to
the topic, but were not articles on the exact page that I requested (NSTeens.org). If I had to say
one was better, I would say that it was Bing. This is because it showed me consumer reviews,
specific descriptions of the games included on this website, and provided the page itself.
The article that I will be TRAAPing is http://www.educationworld.com/a_tech/site-
review/nsteens.shtml.
T (Time): No date is given.
R (Relativity): The article was very relative to my topic. The article gave an overview of
the website as long with a review and description of the sites uses.
A (Authority): The article was written by Jason Tomaszewski, an EducationWorld Social
Media Editor. I believe that he is educated enough to talk about this subject due to what branch
of editing he does (social media).
A (Accurate): The information is very accurate to my knowledge. Every other website I
have seen relating to the website NSTeens.org has said the same thing. Also, his findings match
what I discovered on the site myself.

P (Purpose): The article was written to inform people about this software. I do not
believe his opinions are biased because he does not show any reason to be. I also agree with his
point of view.
I used the database Science Direct because many of the articles on this database are
related to science and/or technology. I used the keywords NSTeens.org and Internet Safety.
The two articles I found on this database were:
http://www.sciencedirect.com.ccbcmd.idm.oclc.org/science/article/pii/S0891524513003714
and
http://www.sciencedirect.com.ccbcmd.idm.oclc.org/science/article/pii/S0891524510000908
The articles found on the search engine were concentrated on one website (NSTeens.org),
while the articles found on the database gave a full description of different resources that one
may use when in need of assistance with children, teens, and parents safely utilizing the internet.
The articles found on the search engines were very brief and straight forward; in comparison to
the articles found on the database, which were very thorough and descriptive. It was very hard
for me to find articles on any of the CCBC databases that directly related to my topic, compared
to how easy it was to find them on the search engines. I believe this may be because my topic
was on one specific website, instead of Internet safety programs/websites as a whole. I believe
the articles found on the database are much more reliable as the author is extremely credible due
to the fact that the articles were posted by the on the web editor of a Pediatric Healthcare journal.
