Vocabulary!
DEFINITION:
Work is the
amount of energy
transferred by a
force.
What do you think makes objects change
speed or direction?
What is a force?
Any push or pull

Newtons Laws of Motion
First Law of Motion
(Law of Inertia)
An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed
and in the same direction unless acted upon by an
unbalanced force. Similarly, an object at rest will remain at
rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force.

FRICTION!
UNBALANCED
FORCE!
AHHHH
GHOST!!!
Objects at rest, such as a chair, desk, book, etc., will not move by itself
unless a force is placed on it.

Second Law of Motion

Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. The
greater the mass (of the object being accelerated) the
greater the amount of force needed (to accelerate the
object).

Force=mass x acceleration
F = ma
(units are Newtons)

Second Law of Motion
Problem Solving
Mike's car, which weighs 1,000 kg, is out of gas. Mike is trying
to push the car to a gas station, and he makes the car go
0.05 m/s. Compute how much force Mike is applying to the
car.

Second Law of Motion
Problem Solving
You push a friend sitting on a swing. She has a mass of 50 kg
and accelerates at a rate of 4 m/s. Find the force you
exerted.
Second Law of Motion
Problem Solving
A worker drops his hammer off the roof of a house. The
hammer has a mass of 9 kg, and gravity accelerates it at the
usual 9.8 m/s. How much force does the earth apply to the
hammer?
Second Law of Motion
Problem Solving
A car whose mass is 1000 kg is traveling at a constant speed of
10 m/s. Neglecting any friction, how much force will the
engine have to supply to keep going the same speed?
(Think INERTIA)
Newtons Laws
Now, lets take Newtons
Second Law (F=ma) one step
further.
How would we solve for
mass?
How would we solve for
acceleration?

Solving for mass.
Mass is force divided by acceleration (m=F/a.)
Acceleration
Acceleration is force divided
by mass (a=F/m.)
Acceleration of an object
moving in one direction is
the change in speed per unit
of time, or change in speed
divided by time. The unit for
acceleration is m/s
2
.
Additional Problem Solving
An object has an acceleration of 1.5 m/s
2
and has a force of 5N.
What is the mass?

A worker drops his hammer off the roof of a house. The
hammer has a mass of 9 kg and the earth applies 88.2N of
force. What is the acceleration of the hammer?

Third Law of Motion

For every action there is an equal and opposite re-action.
Wall-E and Newtons Laws:

The person is pushing on
the ball, but the ball is
pushing back on the person.

See if you can identify the
opposite reaction in each of the
following pictures! We will draw
arrows to show the direction of
the action and opposite
reaction.
Windshield hits bug.
Bug hits windshield.
Ball hits bat.
Bat hits ball.
Newtons Laws: Quick Review!
First Law: If an object is at rest
or in motion, it will stay at rest
or in motion, unless acted upon
by an outside force.
Second Law: Force equals mass
times acceleration (F=ma).
Third Law: For every action
there is an equal and opposite
reaction.

Speed
Quick Review: Acceleration of
an object moving in one
direction is the change in
speed per unit of time, or
change in speed divided by
time. But what is speed
exactly?
Speed is a measurement of
the rate of change of position
(distance) with respect to
time (s=d/t)

Speed Problem Solving
A football field is about 100 m long. If it takes a person 20
seconds to run its length, how fast were they running?

If you drive at 100 km/hr for 6 hours, how far will you go?

Every summer I drive to Texas. It is 3900 km to get there. If I
average 100 km/hr, how much time will I spend driving?

Velocity
Velocity is the measurement
of the speed (how fast) and
direction of an object.
Velocity has direction (ex:
5m/s North)

What is happening in this graph:
Between 0 and 5 minutes?
Between 5 and 8 minutes?
Between 8 and 10 minutes?
Time (s) Distance (m)
0 0
1 5
2 20
3 45
4 80
5 125
Now, lets make our own graph using the
information above. Make sure to label
appropriately!
Your graph should look like this!
