Grand Palais, Lille

A combined expo center and concert hall, completed
in 1994, it steers people via a brutally functional
staircase to a surprisingly civilized auditorium.

Patiovilla,

The occupant of
this 1988 house,
which was built
around a glass-
floored central
patio, boasts with
typical Dutch
frugality about
how little it cost.
Maison Bordeaux
Built in 1998 for a wheelchair-bound publisher and his
family, the house both dictates (through portholes that
custom-tailor the views) and liberates (through a
central platform that goes up and down, allowing the
publisher to change levels without leaving his desk)

Villa Dall'Ava,
Paris
The owners of this
1991 house
requested a
swimming pool on
top of a glass
house. In its staid
neighborhood, the
corrugated
aluminum-and-
glass structure is a
provocation.

Concert Hall, Porto
Koolhaas drilled out a shoebox-shaped concert hall,
''almost like a tunnel through white concrete.'' The
windows are made of corrugated glass. Shown in
model form.

Movable overhead metal towers will display the clothes and
also be withdrawn to permit artistic performances when the
store is finished in 2001, blurring the boundary between
culture and shopping.

The 1993 project was never realized, but this model
shows how the floors were designed to warp until
they became continuous.
WWF and AMO launch
groundbreaking report describing
a world 100% reliant on
renewable energy by 2050
The report proposes to address the urgent
problems caused by looming climate change and
dwindling fossil fuel supply through its assertion
that by 2050, the worlds energy needs could be
met entirely by renewable sources. It outlines an
ambitious energy saving scenario as the first step
toward an energy system in which fossil fuels are
gradually replaced by wind, solar, geothermal,
hydropower and sustainable forms of bio-energy.
The aim of the report is to inspire
governments and businesses to
understand the challenges associated
with this shift and, at the same time, to
encourage them to move boldly to bring
the renewable economy into reality.
The Energy Report shows that the
benefits of a transition to renewable
energy far outweigh the challenges.
