In the 1970s, there was one nesting pair of

American Bald Eagles, our Nations

emblem of Freedom, on Aberdeen Proving
Ground (APG). Now, Aberdeen Proving
Ground is home to the highest density of
Bald Eagles in the northern Chesapeake
Bay region, with an average of 50 nesting
pairs each year.
Learn how the stewardship of an active
military base helped the survival of an
endangered species, with minimal
disruption to military operations.
John Paul Jr. works with the APG Garrison
Environmental Division that monitors the
Bald Eagle population and manages
natural resources at the Proving
Ground. Mr. Paul holds degrees in
biology, ecology and systematics,
teaching, and history and has worked at
APG for 25 years.
