LEGAL / ETHICAL ISSUES IN HENRY VS.

FARADAY DISCOVERY
Abstract
This paper is about the two great pioneers of electromagnetism, who made a major leap in the
field of electricity and engineering, governing with the legal stand point of their discoveries,
greatly deals with the electromagnetic inductance, this study will provide answers in different
questions regarding the subject. The electromagnetic induction, which was discovered by both
Michael Faraday and Joseph Henry, fortunately Michael Faraday successfully published his
findings first. Because Joseph Henry failed to announce his findings earlier, Michael Faraday
receives the credit and recognition slightly more than Henrys. However, in honor of Joseph
Henry, he was named after the unit for inductance, henry (H) and with Michael Faraday for the
unit of capacitance, farad (f). This paper explains the crucial legal process of their independent
discoveries and citing the different point of views of the early and modern scientists. Some
articles elaborate their other contributions; defining their brief history, biography, and curriculum
vitae with explanations on how do intellectual property rights such as patent, trademarks and
copyrights works in there times and in ours. The controversial electromagnetic induction
discovery creates confusion in the early and modern mind; this paper will clarify different
speculations and misjudgments. On a positive note, the story of Michael Faraday and Joseph
Henry will serve as a lesson and inspiration not only for engineers and inventors but for all of us.
