Adult Services
Works to promote independence and enhance the dignity of
North Carolinas older adults, persons with disabilities, and their
families, through a community-based system of opportunities,
services, benefits, and protections.
Adult Services evaluates reports of adult abuse, neglect and
exploitation. Provides transportation to medical appointments
for eligible children and adults. Acts as a guardian and
protective payee. Licenses and monitors facilities for the aged
and disabled. Provides placement in adult assisted living
facilities or nursing homes.

Adult Protective Services
O Very similar to Child Protective Services
O Agency receives a call about an adult who
is suffering abuse or neglect, including
self-neglect
O Investigation follows
O Outcomes can include County taking
guardianship, involuntary commitment in
the case of mental disorders, or service
plan to alleviate reported problems
Guardianship
O County takes responsibility for the
persons welfare.
O Typically a person with serious physical
and/or mental disabilities
O If placed outside County, they are still the
Countys responsibility
O Once placed in adult care home, social
worker assigned to case regularly visits
and monitors the health and well-being of
the client.
Facilities
O Social worker(s) with agency monitor
Adult Care Facilities to ensure they are in
compliance with State regulations
regarding facility environment and client
welfare.
O Social worker investigates any reports of
problems with the facilities
O 14 Adult Care Facilities in Moore County
ranging from 5 clients to over 100.
Special Assistance/In-Home
O Medicaid program to assist clients in
staying safely in their home rather than
being placed in long-term nursing care.
O Supplements client income up to $1248,
for specific purposes, including home
repair, nutrition, utilities, etc.
O Social workers work with these clients to
develop a plan for remaining safely and
securely in their home.
Representative Payee
O County takes responsibility for spending
all or a portion of a clients income for their
welfare.
O Can be a severely disabled person who is
not capable of managing their own
finances.
O Also used for managing funds allocated to
a client for particular purpose such as
SA/IH funds.
