Who are we?
We were founded in 1994.

The blue M&M has been our mascot
since 1996.

After 19 Nsiot and many more loyal
members, here we are today.

We are named after the Hebrew word
for spirit and we have plenty of spirit
to match!

Our colors are blue and white, and we
love our spooey.

We are Ruach BBG!

Meet The Exec Board
The NSiah
Hi, my name is Hayley
Siegel, and I am honored to
be the 19
th
Nsiah of Ruach
BBG #83. As Nsiah, I work
hard to help my chapter
remain successful, as well as
making sure that each
member has a say in our chapter. Being Nsiah
is definitely a lot of work, but every single
minute that I spend for it is extremely
rewarding. Having the opportunity to give
fellow BBG sisters the chance to experience this
order the same way I have keeps me working
hard, and it continuously motivates me to
change this order for the better. I am not only
honored to be Nsiah, but in addition enjoy
every minute of it. I thank every single BBG in
Ruach for allowing me to help make a change
and for inspiring me every day to work hard and
create change.
With so much undying love for Ruach BBG #83
and every single Bnai Brith Girl,
I remain,
Hayley Nicole Siegel
Proud 19
th
Nsiah of Ruach BBG #83
The Sganit
Hi! My name is Dani
Blumstein and I am Sganit of
Ruach BBG #83! I like my
position because I get to plan
fun interactive functions to
get the whole chapter
involved. I really enjoy
planning unique, unexpected functions to keep
my chapter involved. I like to keep them on
their toes by coming up with new ideas. The
way I start to plan a function is by sitting down
and thinking of what I would do for fun. I figure
that if I wouldnt want to participate, then my
fellow BBGs wouldnt want to either. I love to
ask for their help. They are the future of our
chapters function-planning, and I believe it is
good for them to help. Once I have come up
with the idea, I run it by my Nsiah to make sure
that its actually possible. Then when all thats
done, it officially gets put on the calendar and
up on dashboard. My favorite part is the actual
function. I like to explain whats happening and
how things are going to work out. I hope that I
can teach my fellow BBGs how to come up with
their own new function ideas instead of the
planning the same ones over and over.
The Aym Ha-Chaverot
(The MIT Moms)
My name is Honor Shelef and I am one of the
MIT Moms, also known as Aym Ha-Chaverot, of
Ruach BBG#83. I am in charge of recruiting new
members and maintaining chapter
membership. My job is one of the most
important on the
executive board. I have
aspired to be MIT Mom
since I was a MIT myself.
My MIT Mom had inspired
me, and I want to inspire
my own MITs in the same
way. I want them to feel
that I will always be there
for them and that they can
talk to me whenever they want. I also want to
inform them about what they are becoming
involved in, and do the best that I can to ensure
that their BBYO experience is as perfect as
possible. What is most beautiful about my
position is that the girls that I nurture will
become leaders, who will nurture new girls to
become leaders as well. It is a never-ending
cycle that keeps BBYO moving through the
years. Without MIT Moms, there would be no
BBYO.

4

Hi! Im Carly Taub and Im Ruachs other MIT
Mom (or Aym Ha-Chaverot). My job is to recruit
new members, educate them about BBG, and
also to make sure the old members are still
active and loving BBG. I love my position on the
executive board because I love BBG so much,
and with my position, I get to show new
members why it is so great. It is so inspiring
when I see MITs becoming active and getting as
involved as they can.
The Sh'licha
My name is Emily Gorman, and
I am the current Shlicha of
Ruach. As Shlicha, I am in
charge of planning functions
involving three of the six folds
of BBG. The first fold is Jewish
heritage. This involves
functions relating to Jewish
holidays, Israel, and Jewish identity. The next
fold is social action. Although usually seen as a
boring fold, social action is perhaps one of the
most important folds of BBYO. With social
action, we as a chapter are able to reach out
and inform others about the many issues
happening around the world. This is so
important because awareness is the first step
towards saving the world. Finally, as Shlicha, I
am in charge of community service projects.
Community service is so important because it
allows us to give back to the community that
has given us so much. I love my position
because I feel like through these folds we can
truly make a difference in the world one step at
a time.

The Gizbarit
My name is Ilissa Chasnick and
my position on the Ruachs
executive board is Gizbarit, which
is like the chapter treasurer. I
enjoy it because I like the
thought that I am a part of the
reason why this chapter can have amazing
events, or that this chapter can donate so much
money to charities that really need the money.
The Katvanit
Hi, I am Ethel Mogilevsky and I
am Ruach BBGs Katvanit. As
Katvanit, I get to record
minutes at chapter minutes.
Making sure that everything
that is important that is said is
recorded. With those
minutes, I get to make them into something
creative, usually with a theme for the month.
Along with that I promote summer programs! I
help members get informed about summer
programs and make sure they know about
scholarships and all the different programs. I
really love my position because I get to inform
members about how they can stay connected
with BBYO in the summer.
The Mazkirot
HI, our names are Blair Bean, Julia
Weingarden, and Yael Plotnick. We
are the Mazkirot of Ruach. Our job is
to send text messages or calls to
people in the chapter in order to get
the word out about upcoming events.
Since we are all freshmen, we like this
position on the executive board
because it is a good experience, gets
us more involved, and is a great way
to meet new people.

The Orechot
Hi! We are Rachel Breuer and
Emma Morris, and we are
Ruachs Orechot. For our
position, we edit the RC
newspaper, which includes
getting others to help write
articles for it. Later in the year,
we will be making a scrapbook for the chapter
with the pictures we take at all the events and
functions. We also update Ruachs awesome
new website, and encourage members to use it.
Our favorite part is getting to take lots and lots
of pictures of our chapter throughout the year!
The Madricha
Hi, I am Zoe Marrich-Simon I am
the Madricha of Ruach. This
means that I was the past chapter
president from 2011-2012. I am
now attending Western Michigan
University in Kalamazoo as a
freshman; I am fully enjoying my
time there. As Madricha, I am there for both the
Nsiah and anyone in the chapter who needs
advice, help with something, or just if anyone
needs someone to talk to. Even though I am not
physically in the chapter and at programs all the
time, I am still informed about them. I love
hearing from the chapter (anything to keep me
from doing my homework).

The Sunshine Girls
Hello, our names are Hannah Gould
and Ally Atler. We are Ruachs
Sunshine Girls! Our job is spread
sunshine by writing thank you
notes to parents that let us use their
house for chapter events, send
birthday cards to Ruach girls on their
birthdays, and to get people
motivated with chapter spirit! We
love our job as sunshine girl because we are
able to communicate with the community and
spread our good reputation to all of the places
we visit.
The RC Coords
This is Rachael Bradley and Zoe Lis. We have the
honor of being the RC coordinators for Ruach
BBG #83. We love this position.
Regional convention is such an
exciting, influential part of BBYO,
and its so awesome to be able to
lead our chapter into this week of
sisterhood and competition. Sure,
sometimes its stressful, but its
worth it! We remember being a
MIT and having someone explain to
us what RC was, and now the roles are reversed
and we get to describe it to the MITs. Its a big
task to take on, but its one we embrace and we
are eager to do our best.

6

The Advisors
Hello my name is Heather Hoberman. Currently I am one of the advisors of Ruach BBG
#83. This is my second year advising. When I was in high school, I was in Ahavah BBG.
Being an advisor for Ruach has been extremely rewarding. I really enjoy working with the
next generation of Jewish leaders throughout the community. Part of my role as advisor
includes attending programs and making sure programming is appropriate. Working with
the teens one-on-one is really enjoyable. I also enjoy going to Fall Conclave and ETC.

Im Alexis Sack and Im the new co-advisor for Ruach BBG. There are a few
different reasons that I was so drawn to the idea of being a youth advisor. Some of
these reasons include: getting the chance to participate in some fun and different
activities, meeting new people (the amazing girls in my chapter and other advisors
alike), and so on and so on. But the main reason that I was so attracted to this
advising role is because I was excited to give others the chance to become involved
in the Jewish community that I have grown to love.

Although the Detroit community has struggled for the past few years and has seen many of its young
adults move to other areas around the globe, I have found that our Jewish community has stayed
strong. We have come together to help one another in times of joy and happiness, as well as times of
sadness and sorrow. I have found that our community has a lot to offer and I want to help our youth to
see these various opportunities that are available to them. As an individual, I have realized that many of
the people in my community have become like family to me and I value them very much. Eventually the
girls in my chapter and the members of BBYO at large will move on to different cities, states, and
possibly countries as well. But now is the perfect time to show them what a Jewish community has to
offer to them because this way, no matter where they end up, they will always have a piece of home
right there with them.

Interview with the M&Ms!
Ruach: So, how are all of you doing today?
Red M&M: Well, for the most part, it was very good except for the fact that I slept through
my alarm clock and was late to work. Brown wasnt very happy with me. She yelled at me a lot.
And I remembered to take a shower this morning! That was good I guess. During lunch I had to
sit next to Green. But Green kept kicking me under the table, so everyone thought I was going
insane cause I kept squealing.
Ruach: How does it feel to know that Ruach BBG #83 is using you as their mascot, Blue?
Blue M&M: Well, I feel honored that Ruach has me as their chapter mascot. I take it as my duty
to help them everything that they do because they have made me so popular in Michigan
region BBYO.
Ruach: Tell us the secret to why you dont melt in peoples hands?
Green M&M: We wear the latest top notch shells in the world!
Ruach: And why do you taste so good?
Orange M&M: Because we have 100% pure milk chocolate
Ruach: So how does it feel to be the new M&M on the block, Brown?
Brown M&M: It feels really good that I finally have a voice in things. Before all the important
decisions were being made by four guys and one girl, and the boys normally make the wrong
choices. Now were starting to even things out.
Ruach: Whats your favorite store that M&Ms are sold in?
Yellow M&M: Bed Bath and Beyond, because after closing time we get to have pillow fights!
Ruach: Thanks for coming today guys. It was really nice to meet all of you!

Ruach at Summer Programs
This summer I went to South Africa. I did community service at the local elementary school in
Masiphumelele . There, we painted the first grade classrooms and hung out with kids. For the tourist
attractions, I was able to go to Table Mountain, Seal Island, a cheetah rehabilitation center (where I pet
a cheetah!), and an owl and eagle sanctuary. The most remarkable thing was going cage diving. You go
in a cage with six other people and sharks swim around you. The sharks were so close to me; it was once
of the scariest experiences I have ever been through! South Africa was one of the most extraordinary
trips Ive ever been on. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and would not trade it for anything.
Michelle Betman

CLTC 3 was the best 12 days of my life. It didnt matter that I was sweating to death in 100 degree
weather or the food was awful or the water tasted like blood. All that mattered was I got to spend my
time with 46 of the greatest BBGs in the order. You always hear about how you meet your best friends
at CLTC but you truly dont realize the truth until you go. Even though we are across the country, I know
my CLTC friends are there for me no matter what. Not only did I meet amazing friends but I also learned
so much from my coordinators. I understand BBYO so much more now and I am using so much of what I
learned in my position on our exec board. Everyone should go on CLTC because it truly is the best 12
days of your life!

This summer I went on Trek Israel, a BBYO Passport trip. In the beginning I had no clue what to expect.
Before this trip I had only seen pictures of Israel. Most of the places I went I had expected to look much
different than what they were actually like. I was scared to go at first, because I didnt know anyone on
this trip and I was the only person from Michigan. The people came from all over the U.S., and there
were even two people from France! This trip differs from other BBYO summer program trips because I
was not really focused on BBYO at all. It really focused on getting to know the land which very few of us
had been to before. My trip also differed from the other trips mainly because we really experienced
Israel firsthand. We walked the streets, hiked from sea to sea, swam every time we could, rode a camel,
trekked the desert, camped under the stars, and experienced Gadna for a short time. This is only of
the trip; I was in Israel for 4 weeks. We travelled from top to bottom and side to side of the country,
seeing all of Israel. I learned more than I normally do in a year of school! But what really made the trip
special was the people. My friends I made came from far and wide and their reality differs from mine in
ways I didnt even know it could. I learned to see life in a new way with these new people. Because we
only had 4 weeks to get to know each other, we stayed up for hours, and then even woke up sometimes
at 4AM to start the next experience. If I could do it again, I would do it exactly the same. I cannot even
put into words the kind of summer I had. And I miss each and every moment I had dearly.
- Dani Blumstein

During my four years in BBYO I have had the opportunity to attend four different summer
programs which included CLTC, Impact: DC, ILTC, and Kallah. Each one gave me a different
experience that has helped me grow into the person I am today. I have met some of my best
friends at these programs and as well as learned many skills that have helped me in life. I
cannot say that I have a favorite summer program since they all affected me completely
differently. However, I can say that I the past two summers have definitely been the best of my
life. Having the chance to meet people from all over America and the rest of the world has
been such an amazing opportunity. In addition, learning about BBYO and Judaism from my
peers was such a great experience. These programs have allowed me to connect to my religion
even though it may be for only a few weeks during the year. Judaism is an extremely important
aspect to my life and BBYO summer experiences have only strengthened that idea. Overall, my
summer program experiences have shaped me into I am today. I could travel the country by
only staying with people in BBYO! I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to attend these
programs.

My First Event

My first event as an eighth grader was Ruach BBGs 80s workout night. I didnt know anyone there so I
picked up my friend Melanie on the way. She had also joined the chapter, so we went together, along
with my sister who had been in Ruach for a few years already. We all had to dress up in 80s workout
clothes. Dressed up from head to toe in leotards, sweatbands, ripped sweatshirts, leg warmers, and
tights, we drove to Marissa Goldstons house, where the function was being held. We walked in and all
the girls were warm and inviting. I knew some people there already, but not that well. I introduced
myself along with the other new MITs and started conversing until a few girls finally showed up with the
workout video. We started the video and had so much fun joking about the instructors on the tape and
the crazy moves they were having us do. Nobody cared how dumb they looked while working out
because we had instantly become a family. I ate snacks and made a ton of new friends throughout the
evening. My first function was a ton of fun, and I will never forget it!
---Rebecca Ellenstein

I love BBG--I've been to almost every function so far! These are my girls are amazing. Whenever I feel
sad, I can count on anyone to make me feel better, and they always offer to drive me everywhere. They
are for sure my big sisters, but they weren't always. I walked in to my first function late. My mom made
me go; I was scared to death. They would call me all the time, and it was so awkward at first. The more
functions I went afterwards made me realize how much I loved it. When I nominated as Ruachs
Mazkirah, I became the ultimate BBG. I love BBG so much, that someday I might want to be Regional
Nsiah. BBG is my life; I'm one of Ruachs biggest supporters!
-Blair Bean

My first event as an eighth grader was really confusing. It was a chapter meeting at Hayleys house. I
knew Hayley but not really well. I walked into the living room and it was full of a ton of people that I
didnt know. I found one friend I knew really well and then just sat there the rest of the meeting not
knowing anything about BBG. This friend told me to join BBG, so I did but I had no clue what I was
getting into. I learned fast about the awesomeness of BBYO and today I cant imagine my life without it.

Seniors Looking Toward the Future
This year I applied to 5 schools in hopes to go to college next year. Im hoping that in the future I could
go into the field of environmental science or natural resources. I really love the outdoors and I hope that
in the future we can make our world a cleaner place for everyone to live in.
Kadima, looking forward to the future!
~Dani Blumstein

I cannot believe how fast time flies! It is my last year of high school and currently I am in the process of
being accepted to colleges now. My plan for the future is to study in the medical field. I love the feeling
of being able to help others.
Kadima, Im ready to fulfill my dreams!
~Emma Morris

I remember freshman year thinking that it would be forever until I had to think about college. I was
wrong, because the college application process came up so fast it was unbelievable. Which school I
decide to go to is still a mystery, but what I do know is that my college experience is sure to be
absolutely incredible, and I cant wait.
Kadima, bring it on!
-Rachael Bradley

16

I am going to MSU to study pre-med. I plan to get involved with Hillel there, and I will hopefully be
graduating and going to medical school to become a doctor one day!
Kadima! I cant wait for what comes after high school.
~ Hayley Siegel

I am filling out college applications and going to college next year. I then want to work as a museum
curator, ultimately working at the Smithsonian in New York City, and have the opportunity to travel
around the world to meet new people during my job.
Im going to accomplish my dreams, Kadima!
~Stephanie Vettese

I finally finished my college applications a few weeks ago. I have already been accepted to MSU and I am
still waiting to hear from the University of Michigan. I plan to study engineering but am still unsure of
what I want to do in my future.
Kadima, I cant wait for what the future will hold!
~Steffany Ellenstein

On November 16
th
I went to a Friendship Circle Shabbat Dinner with the girls of Ruach BBG. It was a
great way to volunteer while learning about Jewish culture. We sang songs before dinner and it was
great to see how much fun all the kids were having. At dinner I sat next to a Jewish woman from Great
Britain and learned about Jewish traditions in her country. After dinner we played with the children who
seemed to have endless amounts of energy. I spent 20 minutes pulling a kid around on a little cart! By
the end of the night I was completely exhausted but pleased with myself. It was a great experience and I
cant wait to go back and volunteer again!
~Julia Weingarden

My favorite function of the year was a three-fold function (including the community service,
social action and Jewish heritage folds). The activities that were planned were to tie together a
blanket to donate to the homeless, make friendship bracelets for JARC, and learn about our
Stand Up cause for the year. We bonded as sisters and ate lots of spooey.
~Emily Gorman

Hi, Im Hannah Bradley and Im a MIT in Ruach BBG. The function I went to that really stuck with
me was an RC sleepover. My sister is our chapters RC coordinator this year, and even though I
didnt know a lot of people in the chapter I was really excited to meet people. I had so much fun
learning song and cheer. Im really excited for my first RC and to get closer with my fellow BBGs.
~Hannah Bradley

18

The MIT sleepover was a great event for all our Ruach MITs to get together and bond. The other MIT
Mom and I gave all the MITs who attended a MIT book, and we informed them about all the things
that make up BBYO. We then held MIT elections to help make sure that they understood how elections
were handled and presented. All the girls ran for the positions that they wanted, and we told them that
they would be able to work with their respective executive board member to learn how their position is
performed. We also decided to lead the MITs in a casual separates program that involved putting
together a puzzle that represented BBYO and each puzzle piece symbolized the different properties that
make it up. At the end of the sleepover, we had free time and conversed for hours. The MIT sleepover
was a great opportunity to get to know all the MITs and strengthen their love for this amazing order!
~Honor Shelef

I was not planning on attending Fall Conclave. I missed the normal registration deadline and I was
anticipating spending the weekend sitting in bed drinking hot cocoa. However, the girls in my chapter
convinced me to go since the Ruach girls were extremely persuasive. I can honestly say that I am truly
grateful to those girls for getting me to go! I got to see all my friends in the region and meet some new
friends. At first I was a little nervous and shy, but I soon warmed up and found myself having a great
time. The programs were really interesting and fun but the best part was all the amazing people I got to
be around that weekend.

Pet Page!
I have a dog, and his name is RJ. He makes every day better for me! We describe
him as a bucket of love because he loves everyone. He is also very spoiled. Not
only does he have an endless bucket of toys, he has two Snuggies (meant for dogs)
and five different Halloween costumes (three of these were bought the same year).
We also make sure he hears the words youre pretty every day, because he is.
We also tell him hes glad hes pretty because he is dumb as a doorknob. One time
he ran into a trash can because he wanted a treat so bad. I love my stupid, pretty,
spoiled dog. He is my world.

I have two dogs named Cody and Abby. Cody is a cute dog who is a giant puff ball that never shuts up.
Also, his nickname is Pig because all he thinks about is food. My
other dog Abby is a sweetheart, but her nickname is psycho dog
because she is truly psycho! Shes our familys newest dog, and
was the perfect dog for the first week we had her, but then she
turned. Abby has eaten out her stitches into her stomach, stolen
my burrito, chased her tail for an hour straight, attacks anyone
with a banana, and just broke the front door of my house. I love my dogs even though they drive me
nuts and I always joke to everyone that if they want them they can have them. But the truth is that I
wouldnt give them up for the world.

Every day, life in my house is very interesting. I have three energetic dogs that I
am responsible for taking care of. It is a lot of work and these dogs are always
testing my patience. In fact, they drive me crazy, but I still love them to death.
Taking care of animals is a lot of work, but at the end of the day there is
nothing more rewarding.
