Annotated Bibliography for Child Abuse Resources

Barriere, D. (n.d.). Abuse and discipline: A comparison. Child Abuse Effects. Retrieved October
04, 2014 from http://www.child-abuse-effects.com/abuse-and-discipline.html
This website is all about child abuse itself and has any basic information on child abuse.
The particular page that I looked into was about then comparison and differences about
abuse and discipline. It uses a T chart at the beginning to give a brief description of how
they are different i.e. abuse demonstrates anger and hostility while discipline
demonstrates love and affection. They give much information like this and also involve
the situation of spanking. They show statistics of the percentage that corporal punishment
and those that do not. I think this will be helpful to support the idea of whether discipline
is child abuse or not.
Goldman, J., Salus, M. K., Wolcott, D., Kennedy, K. Y. (2003). What factors contribute to child
abuse and neglect? Child Welfare Information Gateway. Retrieved from
https://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/usermanuals/foundation/foundatione.cfm
The chapter form this book which is online is very informative and explains some of the
factors that lead to parents subjecting their kids to abuse or neglect. The authors explain
that there are many risk factors which that fall under four major classifications: parent or
caregiver factors, family problems, child factors, and environmental factors. They go on
to say that many times alcohol and/or drug abuse is involved either from one side or both.
They also try to erase the myth that all child abusive homes are in low economic areas.
The authors state using credible statistics that even knowing what the factors are, they
still cant determine which family will commit child abuse and which wont. This
information will be very helpful in discussing my topic because I will be able to detail the
information that goes under who commits child abuse and why they do.

This report in particularly important and informative because it comes from a strategic
and criminal view of law enforcement. In this report they only specify in sexual child
abuse. We get to understand how the government and law enforcement classify and see
how they see child molesters and pedophiles. They explain how child sex offenders
seduce children and in a way why. They give us characteristics to identify and find the
difference between pedophiles and child molesters. I think this report would be excellent
for my topic because it will give evidence from law enforcements point of view.
OMeara, S., Fedderson, Y. (n.d.). What is child abuse? Retrieved October 7, 2014, from
http://www.childhelp.org/pages/what-is-child-abuse
This entire website is an organization which helps to raise money and awareness for child
abuse and neglect. This particular webpage identifies what child abuse and tells of the
types of abuse that there are. They explain that there are four types of abuse which are:
neglect, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. They go into detail about each type and
give examples also. They also talk about in this section what are the signs and symptoms
of how to tell someone is suffering from abuse. I think this will be the most important
part to begin my paper so that everyone understands what child abuse really is. It will
also help to go into the other subtopics of my main subject.
Ross, A., Juarez, C. (2014). A brief history of fatal maltreatment and neglect. Forensic Science,
Medicine and Pathology, 10(3). 413-414. Doi: 10.007/s12024-014-9531-1
This article explains the definition of child abuse, but also gives insight on many
examples of injuries to children caused by neglect or of nutrition deprivation. During the
paper, they explain what is physically done to the body of a child whether it was through
unintentional or intentional harm. With this they are able to identify and give examples of
the types of physical trauma on bones a child may experience. They also explain the
vigorous medical exams children have to go through once they believe a child or infant is
suffering from child abuse. This document would help to support my topic of child abuse
in the sense that it shows how child abuse may lead to death or severe trauma in a child.
Saha, I., Paul, B., Das, D. K., Dinda, J., Mukherjee, A., Basu, S. (2013). Repeated abuse during
childhood and adolescence leading to suicidal behavior in an adolescent: A case report.
Journal of Family Violence. 213-217. Doi: 10.1007/s10896-012-9481 x
This report is on a boy (AD) who was 15 years old at the time and was subjected to large
amounts of abuse not only from his parents, but also from other children at school and
relatives. The abuse became too much that AD tried committing suicide several times.
Fortunately neighbors were able to help him. He received therapy and is now a volunteer
at a community health center. The purpose of this story is to show everyone that abuse
may not just come from one source and that it may not be noticeable, and that the abuse
may be too much for children. This report is essential to my topic because it gives me a
valid experience to show that child abuse is serious and may cause innocent children to
take their lives.

jeff.com/local%20news/2014/09/29/disciple-versus-abuse-guernsey-county-official-
points-out-the-line
This is a news article that is discussing the issue of whether or not Adrian Peterson
(running back for the Minnesota Vikings) intended on disciplining his child and not
abusing him. Nicole Caldwell -the executive director of Guernsey County Children
Services- explains that there is a blurred line between discipline and child abuse. She
goes on to explain what the difference between discipline and child abuse is. I think this
article would be great support in what discipline and child abuse is, what is common
between them, and also the difference. It would also be a great way to bring the topic up
to a modern scenario.
Vizard, E. (2013). Practioner review: The victims and juvenile perpetrators of child sexual
abuse- assessment and intervention. Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 54(5).
503-515. Doi: 10.1111/ jcpp.12047
This document is very informative because of the topic that is being discussed. The
whole purpose of this paper is to prove and give valid information that most perpetrators
of child abuse have previously suffered from some sort of child abuse. They prove this by
evaluating a certain amount of sex offenders and seeing what their childhood experiences
were. Although all the offenders were not abused in some way, the majority will
conclude that they were. I believe that this information will help my paper to explain who
commits child abuse and also how child abuse affects children for the future.
