Notes to the Letters' Symbolism in the Zohar

jwr47
Intro
From earlier studies the vowels had been proven the most important symbolism-carriers. Therefore
I decided to investigate the vowel-oriented issues in the Zohar

.
The Zohar!s e"planation of the intonations# vowels $points%# and letters is given in the following
comment section&
The relationship between the 'ebrew letters# vowels $points% and intonations are
e"plained in terms of their spiritual significance. The Zohar tells us that the letters#
vowels and intonations are not merely the building the bloc(s of language. They are the
building bloc(s of the entire cosmos. They are the sounds of creation# the forces by
which stars and planets are constructed# and by which physical and metaphysical worlds
are erected.
)ust as a human voice in song can shatter glass and evo(e tears# the 'ebrew alphabet
affects both physical and spiritual realities. *e can set these forces in motion by
meditatively scanning the very letters that spea( of the secrets of the letters themselves.
+y so doing# we can draw spiritual sustenance and ,ight into our daily lives.
This documents illustrates my interpretation based on the Zohar!s translations into -nglish and
.erman. /uotations have been capitali0ed as listed in the source file# but the relevant (eywords
have been highlighted.
The 'ebrew of the late centuries +1 and early centuries 23 had a system with five phonemic long
vowels 4a5 e5 i5 o5 u56 and five short vowels 4a e i o u6. 7f these vowels a subset I# 7# 8 and 'ei
intensely has been used for symbolism# which is e"plained in the Zohar.
9ost of the symbolism refers to the creation phase# in which words are being generated by
combining letters. The three basic vowels I# 7# 8 also refer to three pillars# which represent gender#
planets# colors# etc.
There is a stri(ing correlation to the I78-root for the central :oman god )upiter. The words ius#
pius $pious)# justice# judge# iugum, yoke# etc.# which may relate to Jupiter# belong to derived
subsets of the I8-words.
