In this presentation I will be comparing and

contrasting my own research to a case

study that is based on a young 15 year old
girl called Kate. In the case study she speaks
about what she likes doing on her current
holidays, her last holiday, the kind of holiday
she thinks she will take in the future and her
perceptions of destinations.

Overall 10 people took part
in my survey. 90% were
Female and 10% were
Male. This does not make
the information fair as is
should be around half and
half for gender type.
In the Kate Case Study the age range
was from 15-17. Where as my survey
was from the ages of 18-22 which does
not make the information valid.

Purpose for a
Holiday
When Kate is on holiday she likes lying
on the beach, swimming, going to the
pool, going to pubs, doing water sports.
She gets bored of sightseeing as she
prefers to stay on the beach all day.

As you can see from my data, more
young people from 18-22 are more
interested in other things than the basic
beach holiday. Although some answers
to relate to Kates statement such as
going to the beach, nightlife and water
sports. But you can also see one of the
higher percentages go for adventure
and attractions and sightseeing.

As you can see from the graph and pie charts
below you can see that
Florida Disneyland, 69% Agreed with Kate.
Ibiza 100% Agreed it is a partying destination.
Dublin 70% Agreed about the pubs
Paris 70% Agreed it is a Romantic destination.

The Other 70%
In my survey 30% said that their dream holiday
would be a round the world trip which included
North and South America. The rest of the 70% said
other destinations which two of the destinations
where in America which agreed with one of
Kates Dream Holiday Destinations but not Ibiza.
Previous destinations people went to from my Survey was Dublin,
New York, France, Magaluf, Florida, Spain, Centre Parcs and Turkey.

Who did you travel with?
As you can see from the graph above,
50% travel with friends from the age of
18-22 which Kate wishes to do when
she is 18. But it also shows that not all 18+
would want to travel with friends as the
rest have travelled with family and their
partner.

As you can see from the graph above
people from the ages of 18-22 not everyone
goes on the typical clubbing holiday. The
majority went to attractions and sightseeing
which does not agree with what Kate want
to do when she is 18.
Kate believes that as she gets
older that her holiday activities will
change because she will have a
family by then. As you can see
from the pie chart below 90%
agreed with her.

Another thing that 50% of the survey agree
with Kate is that they believe that the
reasons they will go to these destinations
when they are older for family.
Young Americans dont tend to travel overseas for
several reasons
The Size: Most family vacations in America are to
other parts of America. Why? Because the US takes
up the width (and a lot of the height) of a whole
continent, and we have all the worlds environments
in our states. Need beaches? Head to Florida. The
tropics? Hawaii. Desert? Arizona. Cold tundra?
Alaska. Temperate forests? Washington. Matt. N,
(2008)
Fear: Americans are just scared of the world. I mean,
really scared. Maybe even petrified. In this post-9/11
world, Americans have been taught that the world is
a big, frightening place. Matt. N, (2008)

Chinese Holiday influences

Online Chinese agree that they choose destinations based on their natural
scenic beauty (77% agree), history & culture (67%), and weather(65%). Greeny
and space are important contrasts to the modern, overcrowded cities in China.
The Chinese have a respect for other nations historic culture and are interested
in learning about them whilst travelling. This also ties into the fact that travel is
about personal development, education and learning.

Seeing famous and well-known locations is more important to Chinese(72%
agreed) than exploring new places away from the crowds (50%agreed).

40% of Chinese agree that it is more important that holidays are exciting than
relaxing, but 19% disagreed. The travel market in China is still in its early phases
and there is a perception to try and fit in as much a possible whilst away. Travel
is a status symbol and returning travellers like to brag about all the places they
have visited to friends and family back in China.

65% agreed that films they had watched have influenced their choice of
holiday destination and just 10% disagreed. A similar story emerged for music,
where 53% agreed it had influenced their choice and 10% disagreed.
Visit Britain (2010)
Young Spanish will have different
perceptions on travelling abroad because
they will not want to travel for Sun lust as
this is part of there every day life. They are
more likely to want to travel to a
destination for Wander lust and for colder
weather as it is normal for Spain to have
hot weather.
In my small sample questionnaire I chose who participated
in the activity, the majority of them study the same subject
and has the same interests, there was also a lot more
females than males that took part in the survey. This means
that my small sample survey was bias.
In my questionnaire I asked what peoples perceptions were
about the same destinations Kate spoke about but I missed
a destination out which makes the survey slightly unreliable.
The age range that the case study was based on was from
the ages of 15-17, where as I could only find 18-22 year olds
to take the questionnaire which makes the information
invalid.
Overall I think that Kate has a very low knowledge and
ambition about what destinations there are and what they
have to offer. As I have learned from my survey most
people from the ages of 18-22 want to explore more long-
haul destinations than short haul and want to take part in
activities, go sightseeing and learn about the culture.
