Lesson Objectives 1. Assess the students current knowledge of Greek history, society, and culture. Think about the why and what of their current understandings. 2. Research myths and history that relates to different locations in ancient Greece. 3. Create a PowerPoint display that is Travel to Ancient Greece 4. One-on-one reteaching of lesson plan for Student H Natl / State Standards World History Standard 8- Understands how Aegean civilization emerged and how interrelations developed among peoples of the Eastern Mediterranean and Southwest Asia from 600 to 200 BCE. Benchmarks: Understands the role of art, literature, and mythology in Greek society. Language Arts Standard 4- Gathers and uses information for research purposes. Benchmarks: Uses a variety of resource materials to gather information for research topics; Determines the appropriateness of an information source for a research topic; Organizes information and ideas from multiple sources in systematic ways. Geography Standard 6- Understands that culture and experience influence peoples perceptions of places and regions. Benchmarks: Knows how places and regions serve as cultural symbols; Knows the ways in which culture influences the perception of places and regions Pre-Instructional Activities Create a map of Greece on PowerPoint that incorporates pictures of important sites (http://www.princeton.edu/ ~markwoon/Myth/myth-maps.html) and monuments (http://www.indiana.edu/~kglowack/athens/ sites.html)). Go over this map with the students. Prompt asking the following questions (based on a graphic organizer that will be completed as discussion occurs). What do you know about the people of Greece? What do you know about the culture of Greece? What do you know about the history of Greece? Teaching
Small Group Activity: Using iPad review the myths and figures associated with Greece. Go over graphic organizer about Greece. Choose one of each that the student is interested in Myth Historical event Historical figure Talk about the following with the student; How could a tourist experience this location since there is not time travel? What existing ruins, artifacts, museum displays, and literature exist that can help the traveler? Assignment (This assignment will be completed during the following class period): Students should take what we have completed in our organizer about Travel to Ancient Greece and create a Travel to Ancient Greece PowerPoint display. This display should incorporate a map of Greece along with connections to the above questions. This could include pictures of ruins, mythological figures, etc Closure Discussion Questions: What sources do we use for knowledge of ancient history? How is this different than gaining knowledge of modern history?
Assessment: Students will be assessed based on participation and overall contributions to the Travel to Ancient Greece PowerPoint display.
