THE LOREM IPSUMS FALL 2016
2

We are finishing up our first unit in Math on place value in the beginning weeks of October
(comparing and ordering numbers, finding patterns in numbers, exploring numbers up to 1000).
Please continue to practice finding the meaning of specific digits within a number: 325 = the 3 is in
the hundreds column and represents 300. This month, we will be focusing on Measurement. We
will learn how to estimate, measure and record length, height and distance using standard units.
We will also learn how to select and justify the choice of a standard unit or non-standard unit to
measure specific objects.
As we have worked hard establishing routines and expectations in
our classroom, students will be introduced to all areas of our Daily
5 Program (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on
Writing, Listen to Reading). We will be learning a variety of reading
comprehension strategies. We have been working on checking for
understanding and backing up and re-reading. When checking for understanding we
ask ourselves What did I just read about? We will also be making connections to read materials.
Students can make connections to themselves, other books they have read, and to the real world.
In writing, we are still focusing on creating well-developed Recounts. You can discuss past events
with your child using the words first, next, then, and finally. Continue to practice weekly focus
words and complete the nightly homework. After Thanksgiving, we will begin Procedural Writing.
Religion and Family Life
Final Words
As always, if at any time, you have a question or concern, please contact me by phone at the
school or through your childs planner.
Have a Blessed Thanksgiving,
A. Sabatini !
In Religion, we are still working on the themes, Lets be Friends and We Welcome and Gather the
Spirit. This month, the virtues that we will be focusing on are: Patience and Acceptance.
Emphasizing these virtues at home will help your child realize their importance in everyday life.
