During the first day of class observation in a level 3 class, the students were given different resources of ethical issues to the students topic. The issues are on Violence, Euthanasia, Organ Transplant, Death Penalty, Abortion. There were 6 students in these level 3 health class. Students chose the topic that they want to develop in preparation for an internal assessment.
When teacher started the class with several questions just as to settle them down and be on task, at first the students were not really focused because they were still talking about what they did the other day. Teacher tried to bring them back on task by asking student A about his topic. Student A said that his topic is on organ transplant and started sharing about his knowledge of this particular topic. Student B started sharing also about his topic on Capital punishment why considered it an ethical issue. Student C shared his ideas on Euthanasia why he chose this issue as his topic. The other students started sharing about their own ethical issues and discussion started. Using their own chosen topics, they started engaging with one another, sharing reasons why their topic is an ethical issue.
Students sharing of their ideas, opinions was a display that the students are already settled down, that they are already on task. There was now an exchange of question answer from the student to teacher, teacher to student. It was a very productive class in the sense that they were able to do the task for that day.
My analysis on this, is that students who are interested of the subject matter can interact without any difficulty. Students who have a knowledge background of the topic can share during class discussion. The teachers asking them questions led the students more involved in the discussion. 19 August 2014
Second day of class observation. They still have the same topic because they are preparing for the internal assessment. Boys were not that focused because some were singing, some were talking, some were laughing so teacher tried to settle them down by asking boys who did not share something about their own topic to also share now. The boys who were asked to share something about their topic did share but the other boys were just talking. Teacher stops the boys sharing their topic to let the other boys know that they need to listen, to be respectful of the one talking. The teacher told them off but in a very refined manner so as not to embarrass the boys. The boys stopped talking, stopped laughing and just listen to those who are sharing. This only lasted for 15 minutes. The boys went back to talking, laughing. The teacher told them off again because time is being wasted. The boys listened to the teacher but there was not much class interaction because the boys were not really focused.
My analysis on this is, the boys attention to listening is too short. They should be given an activity where in they will really have to move, to talk . 20 August 2014
Third day, the students were in the computer room. Students were reading the assessment book given to them by their teacher. Teacher first started with a list vocabulary for the students to look up for the meaning so that they will understand the meaning of the words being used for the unit assessment that they will be doing. Students were on task because there was a time limit given to them. Teachers went around checking if students were on task. Students continued with the work and proceeded looking for more information about the ethical topic that they have chose.
My analysis on this, these students will be on task when given a specific time to finish the work. This is not to pressure them but letting them be on task, that they are there to learn and not just to mock around. 21 August 2014
On the 4 th day, students were still in the computer room doing the research. They were into a lot of web sites just as to gather information regarding their topic. Teacher goes around to check if students are on task. Some students were doing two things at the same time, researching and playing games if the teacher goes to another student. Students asked teacher if he is on the right web site and teacher checks on it. Students were just on the different websites but no one is writing down what they have researched on.
My analysis on this is, students are not equipped with the skill of writing down what they have read. They are not yet really focused on the topic that they have chosen. Not much class interaction.
25 August 2014
On the 5 th day, students were asked by the teacher that they have to complete their internal assessment on methamphetamine. They have not completed this internal assessment. Students were in the computer room because they need the computers to complete this assessment. Not much interaction in class, just students asking for the assistance of the teacher if he is on the right tack. Teacher supervises the students completing their work.
My analysis, the students were not on the track wherein all health internal assessments should be finished first.
26 August 2014
The students were still finishing their unfinished assessments. They were completing everything that they need to complete. No class interactions. Just researching.
My analysis on this is that the students were very lax in their studies.
27 August 2014
Students were in the computer room still completing their health practices assessment. No interaction. Just teacher going around to check on the students. Teacher asking them if there are any questions
My analysis, its too long for the boys to finish or complete their health practices assessment. With the use of the computer they should have already finished their assessment.
28 August 2014
The boys were still completing their health practices assessment. Teacher guiding, assisting them in their work. Teacher checking on their work. That is the only interaction in the class.
My analysis, the boys were not really that focused because they should have already completed the assessment.
08 September 2014
My first day of actual teaching. My students learned how to unpack the aligned level 3 health achievement standard today. All of them learned something because they were engaged. They participated very well in breaking down words so as to know what it means. They were so enthusiastic in sharing words that they think would relate to the word that were breaking down.
My next step In order to engage them more in the discussion is to give them more time to think before they could contribute to class discussion. 09 September 2014
Today my students learned what health promotion is. They were able to give different definitions of health promotion taken from different sources. Jonathan and Sione did learn a little today because they were not really reading the task. They were not focused on the work assigned because they were busy talking.
In order for these two students to learn is not to let them sit together. I will let them sit with another student so that they can focus on their work. I should always be checking on their work if they are really are on task or not. 10 September 2014
Today my students learned about the different health models, their differences and similarities. They all learned but not that deep because they are being distracted by talking to each other. They talk of other things rather than what they are reading. Their learning of the different health models were not in depth but there was students interaction. The students were engaged.
To be able to let them learn more next time, I will just let them read one health model at a time and not give them the whole copy of the model because they said theres a lot to read If they see thats theres a lot to ready, they tend to stop what they are reading and talk with their seatmate then read again so there is no proper concentration. I should be asking them more short leading questions that could engage them in discussion.
15 September 2014
Today my students learned about the global health models in health promotion. They were able to compare and contrast these models. Jonathan, Scott did not learn anything today because they were playing games instead of researching the task assigned to them. They pretend to be researching but when I turned my back, they are back into playing so they did not learn anything today.
In order that they will learn more, next time I will give them a time limit to come out with the result of the task that they are assigned. In that way they will really concentrate in their research if there is a time limit . A closer supervision on these two students who are not on task. 16 September 2014
Today my students learned more about the Bangkok Charter. They were able to identify key actions required in health promotion. They were not able to critically evaluate these key actions required in health promotion because there was not enough time to do this. Next time, pair activities should be given a time limit so that they will be able to do other task like evaluating the key actions which is very important. Enough time should be given for them to share their pairs work to class so that more class interaction will happen.
17 September 2014
My students learned more about the Ottawa Charter and they were able to identify the key actions required in health promotion. Students had the hard time researching for more information about this health model so I worked more closely with them engaging them in questions and giving feedbacks so as to improve their learning. So that my students will learn more I need to assist them more in the way they research because they tend to open a lot of web sites but they are not sure which one is the right site for their research. I will check if they are writing what they are researching.
18 September 2014
My students learned more about the Maori health promotion models. They were able to identify and describe each of these Maori health promotion models. They learned because they were engaged. They were able to fill up the templates for their work because I did a close supervision on what they are doing.
In order that there will be more learning, more supervision should be done, more questions ask to lead the students into what they are doing, more feedbacks so that they know that they are on the right track with their work.
