Jack Ross 21309635 Tutor - Craig McCormack The gap for this project was the current UWA student card is an in- efficient method of opening locked doors after hours. On top of that it is very difficult to use the student card if carrying books and the card is also very easy to loose. As shown in the section below within the wrist band are a capacitor, IC chip and a wire coil. Together these components allow the band to function and open locked doors around campus.
Detail 1 demonstrates how the clip mechanism of the band works via sliding in and locking and being released by the push of a button. Detail 2 show how the thin leather veneer is held to the band itself. The dimensions have been chosen so that the band can fit anyone comfortably. Although the watch was not designed by myself its display and size were considered. I chose to only display the time on the watch because other options such as day and month overcrowed the display, which had to be small enough so that it didnt limit the Users mobility. The clip mechanism of the band had to be easy to use, however it also had to connect the wiring within the cord when around Ones wrist. As shown in Detail 1 on page 1 the clip slots in to the other side and is hooked in by a catch. Both clip and catch are made of copper and are attatched to the wiring within the band. This locking system allowed for a sturdy lock which is able to carry an electrical current through it. The design of an artifact to satisfy the original gap became a band rather than any other shape due to it functionality. Wearable artifacts such as rings, gloves and brouches were considered however the band was the only design which nicely balanced comfortability, practicallity and functionality. When talking to peers most agreed that it was the most realistic concept of a sucessor to take over from the current student ID card. The Student band acting as a desk clock A student wearing the Student ID band Page 3 2014 Written description: The original gap for this project was Student cards are an in- efficient method of opening locked doors and are easy to lose. The gap has been fulfilled by the design of this wrist band, being a hands free device people attempting to open locked doors after hours will no longer struggle while carrying items or become frustrated when finding the card in their bag. Similarly since the band is attached to the user it allows the user to carry items while opening the door and to not lose the band. The design of the band also allows the watch component to be used as a desk clock, helping students be more punctual, which is a huge plus for many students. The band was designed with the user in mind and the thin leather veneers in each part of the plastic shells makes the band very comfortable in any scenario. Being flexible is also crucial as far as wrist band technology goes, sine the band is made of alternate sections of plastic with veneer and rubber cord it is able to bend and morph to the shape of the Users wrist.
Aesthetically the band was kept black and white so that it is uni-sex and both male and female students could wear it. The design has also been made to not look like any standard watch or piece of jewellery, it is unique so that it is a symbol of studying at UWA. The band has also been given a futuristic flavour which is appealing to many students. The UWA Student ID band will change staff and students lives forever. No longer will they struggle after hours with locked doors, no longer will they be locked out because they have lost their card, no longer will they have to carry around yet another poxy piece of plastic. The band saves the UWA people time, effort and frustration on the daily. Were the band succeeds most perhaps is the fact that it could legitimately replace the current UWA student ID card. The design is cost effective because it is made of cheap materials and the internal system works perfectly with the current sensors around UWA. Many students that have observed this project while it was being completed saw the band as a legitimate successor to the current card and would be excited to wear it if they had the chance.
