Year 10

The first year of the GCSE course is teacher directed in that

students are given themes to work on that they develop
according to their individual strengths & interests. The stress is
upon observational skills & and the continued development of
their own knowledge of process.

The GCSE course id completely individual differentiated.

Observational Skills

1.) Formal Elements of Drawing:

Line, tone, contrast, texture, form, use of positive &
negative shape, spatial concepts, perspective etc…
2.) Colour:
Colour mixing (use of colour circle), tonal colour,
complimentary colour, discord, harmony, colour
perspective, warm & cold colours.
3.) Composition:
Symmetry, asymmetry, balance, experimenting with
different types of composition, using thumbnail sketches
& viewfinders and experimenting with changing
viewpoint.

Year 11

The second year of the GCSE course is much more student

directed. Themes are still given for the students to work upon
which they develop according to their individual strengths and
interests, but now students may introduce their own ideas and
starting points.

The emphasis is on how successfully students work through an

idea from conception to realisation working independently.
Stress is placed upon working in a systematic way through the
use of detailed sketchbooks & annotated work sheets to assist
the objectives of the G.C.S.E course. High levels of teacher
support and help continue to play an important role. Whether
this is to a greater or lesser degree depends upon the individual
student's level of attainment.
By working in this way it is envisaged that students will
encounter much less difficulty and stress when confronted with
the O.C.R. examination paper.
