IF I COULD TURN BACK
TIME...
I have come to believe that
a womans character is not
just formed by the roles she
plays or the job she has or
where shes from or what
has happened to her. A
womans character is most
profoundly shaped by
the daily habits she keeps.
And this is hopeful to me,
because its never too late to
adopt a habit or two from a
woman we admire.

STATISTICS: ADULT READERS
Findings from 2007 AP Poll in Washington Post:
The average adult American read only FOUR books that
year.
Of the pre-service teachers (thats you!) 54.3% were
unenthusiastic about reading (Anthony and Mary
Applegate).

RESEARCH THAT BEGGED
OUR ATTENTION...
Secondary school students are reading significantly below levels.
Literacy scores of high school graduates dropped between 1992-2003.
8.7 million secondary students one in four who are unable to read
and comprehend material in text books.
About half of students tested were ready for college-level reading, and
the 2005 scores were lowest in the decade.
Only 13 percent of American adults are capable of performing complex
literacy tasks.

HABIT #1:
CHOICE
Students have a say in what
they read. They take ownership
of their reading decisions.
Reading is not regarded as a
punishment.
Sunday, October 19, 14
CHOICE IS AT THE CORE...
Why? Perhaps one of the reasons most adults are not
readers is that once upon a time they were forced to read
whole-class novels such as Moby Dick. Without choice,
it was yet another chore to read at the same pace as our
classmates.

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS TO GET STARTED:
What do you think of this
book? Are you enjoying it?
Why or why not?
How would you compare
this book to others youve
read recently?
What genre would you
classify this book?
What have you been
thinking about as youve
been reading this book?
Tell me about the main
characters? Who is telling
this story?
What are you planning to
read next?
