Week 3 Overview

Teacher: Chris Ngo

Evaluator: Richard Bergstrom
Date of Lesson: 10/6/2014
Grade: 4
th

Number of students: 22
Unit: 3 (Chasing, Fleeing, Dodging)
Previously learnt skills: Spatial Awareness, personal space, general space, high-med-low
levels, variation in speed, teamwork
Facilities: Outside blacktop
Equipment: 10 cones, 5 hula hoops, 9 gator balls, 5 pennies (jerseys) 4 of 1 color, 1 of
another

1. Systematic Observation 1
a) SOFIT
b) The first 10 min. of the SOFIT, I observed Christopher (180 seconds of MVPA), Joseph
(110 seconds of MVPA), and Jenika (120 seconds of MVPA). The total MVPA was 460
seconds (7 min. 40 sec.). Chris ignored some of the things the students would do when they
werent harming anyone so the lesson would continue, and therefore increased MVPA.
c) There was some management because the kids were off task. Chris could take more
authority and set the consequences of off task behavior prior to the lesson. Chris should
address rules and safety issues so the students understand that certain behaviors arent
welcomed in Tiger Pride. However, the MPVA increased so management decreases.

2. Systematic Observation 2
a) Demonstrations
b) Chriss cues were easily understood however, he didnt demonstrate them. The cues were
easy enough to understand that the students didnt need a demonstration for Space Tag but
a demo would be good for students motivation. He did demo for Super It and at the correct
speed.
c) Chris should demonstrate at the correct speed and with more passion/effort so the kids
are likely to do the same as well and also stay on task. Chris should also use a student for the
demonstration so peer teaching can happen.

3. Systematic Observation 3
a) Idiosyncrasies
b) "Ok" - 1 (used during activity).
c) No strategies to fix here since Chris does a great job not saying these idiosyncrasies too
often. But since he doesnt say many idiosyncrasies, he should use his words to provide
positive feedback.

Equipment: 5 pennies (jerseys) of different color

1. Systematic Observation 1
a) SOFIT
b) The first 10 min. of the SOFIT, I observed Yasmin. She had a MVPA of 340 seconds.
Second 10 min. (Miguel) was 230 seconds of MVPA. The last 10 min. was 110 seconds and I
observed Joseph. TOTAL: 680 seconds (11 min. 20 seconds). There was a big improvement
since 10/6 when the activity time was 460 seconds. I think its because the activities that
kept their MVPA high.
c) Theres a lot less management because the kids are on task more. Chris could continue
encouraging positive on-task behavior to keep the students motivated and more likely to
participate in activities. He should address safety and rules before every lesson so students
dont forget.

2. Systematic Observation 2
a) Demonstrations
b) For Simon Says, Chris doesnt demonstrate because its self-explanatory. But there could
be a few kids who know the game but play with different rules so Chris should demonstrate
regardless of how common the game is.
c) He should demonstrate every activity no many how common or easy the content is. Some
kids may play by different rules so we dont want any confusion because thatll create more
management/instruction time and less activity time. Also have a student demonstrate with
him.
