Student Reading Log
At home, students are required to read for at least thirty-five minutes, twice a week.
Students must include: 1) the date, 2) the author, 3) the title, 4) the type of text theyre reading, and
5) a detailed response to any of the questions on the backside of this page. (Response must include
4-5 sentences.) A parent or guardian must sign for both days of reading. The reading log is due
every Monday in class. It is worth 10 points5 for each day. (Extra credit is given for submitting
additional logs in a week! Attach them on lined paper, please! )

Reading Log details

TYPES OF TEXT:
There are two general types of text: Literature and Informational Text. Students have the
freedom to choose from any of the following under either type (chart taken from
www.corestandards.org).
Literature Informational Text

Literary Nonfiction and Historical,
Scientific, and Technical Texts


Includes the subgenres
of adventure stories,
historical fiction,
mysteries, myths,
science fiction, realistic
fiction, allegories,
parodies, satire, and
graphic novels

Includes one-
act and multi-
act plays,
both in
written form
and on film

Includes the
subgenres of
narrative poems,
lyrical poems, free
verse poems,
sonnets, odes,
ballads, and epics

Includes the subgenres of exposition,
argument, and functional text in the form of
personal essays, speeches, opinion pieces,
essays about art or literature, biographies,
memoirs, journalism (newspaper/ magazine
articles), and historical, scientific, technical,
or economic accounts (including digital
sources) written for a broad audience

In other words, students can choose to read and write about a chapter from a book
theyre reading, a magazine article, a newspaper article essentially ANYTHING
(appropriate). For type, students should write either literature or informational
whichever corresponds to their selection.

QUESTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM:
Students should respond to at least one of the following questions for each log, and
they must select a different question for each day they read in a week: (5-6 sentence
responses. Provide evidence, details, from the text to support your answers.)

1. What is the theme or main idea of the text?
2. Write an objective summary of the text. (Objective = no personal opinions/feelings.)
3. Choose two or more characters from the text. Describe their relationship.
4. What conclusions can you draw from the text?
5. What is the authors purpose in writing the text? (To entertain, persuade, or inform? Be
sure to define the type of purpose you choose in your response, too.)
6. Choose an action of a character in the text. Do you agree with the characters actions?
7. Do you have any questions about the plot or theme of the text? What are they? Explain
why you choose these questions to ask.
8. How is the text organized? (Chronological, How-To, Topic Descriptive,
Compare/Contrast, Cause/Effect, Problem/Solution, Proposition/Support.)
