Test-II: English Language
Directions (Q. 51-62): Read the passage carefully
and answer the questions given below it. Certain words/
phrases are given in bold to help you locate them while
answering some of the questions.
In the past, the few women professionals who dotted
our corporate landscape suffered in silence, not willing to
complain about discrimination or harassment for fear of
losing their jobs. Today, there is strength in numbers and
K
KUNDAN
women are willing to raise issues of gender discrimination
and sexual harassment publicly. Although women have
greater confidence, financial independence, strong peer
groups and a deeper understanding of their rights, they
are still reluctant to expose issues related to sexual
harassment and to take their tormentors down the legal
path of justice. There exists, unfortunately, a huge
psychological challenge that women, and society as a
whole, need to address. This relates to behavioural
attitudes and codes of conduct in the workplace.
It was in 1997 that a womens rights group called
Vishaka filed a PIL in the Supreme Court in response to a
humiliating legal battle fought by a rape victim in Rajasthan,
who did not get justice and was shamed and ostracised by
her community instead. Consequently, the Supreme Courts
Vishaka judgment laid down guidelines for employers to
deal with complaints of sexual harassment/assault at the
workplace, which included the formation of an independent
redressal committee.
If one looks at the statistics of reported rape cases, it
is obvious that women have been denied justice. Between
2009 and 2012, over one lakh cases of rape and molestation
were registered, but, sadly, the convictions declined from
44 per cent in 1973 to 24 per cent in 2012.
Against this backdrop, the alleged sexual assault case
involving the former editor-in-chief of Tehelka, Tarun
Tejpal, has yet again revealed, the ugly truth of how women
are victimised in their workplaces. Worse still, Tejpal initially
confessed to misconduct, and then retracted once he
realised the gravity of the case. The victim, on the other
hand, has courageously steered the matter on a legal course
and is now braving the onslaught of allegations and tirades
from Tejpals camp. Why did you ride the elevator with
Tejpal for a second time? is one such ridiculous question.
Inane comments such as these, about such serious matters,
are what undermine the status of women in our society.
Another outrageous comment came from a UP politician
who now questions the employability of women. Such
irresponsible utterances must be condemned if we are ever
to build an equitable and modern society. The anger and
outrage expressed this time has reached a critical decibel
level and needs to be channelled into positive change. We
cannot allow our attention span to be so short. We must
act swiftly and surely to ensure that the Vishaka guidelines
are implemented by every organisation. Women must be
empowered and provided a safe working environment.
51. What needs to be done to address the issues of gender
discrimination and sexual harassment at workplace?
1) A womens cell should be established in every
office where women are employed.
2) There should be separate seating arrangement for
women in corporate offices.
3) There should be specific code of conduct to
provide adequate safeguards to women employees.
4) There should be provision for harsh punishment
for those who do not follow the codes of conduct
meant especially to protect women employees.
5) None of these
52. Which of the following is true with regard to women
professionals who worked in corporate offices in the
past?

3) To prove that women have become more
courageous to lodge a complaint against a man,
however powerful he may be

a controversial man
5) None of these

in the passage regarding the employability of women?

as men
2) That it is not proper to employ women in offices

women are more responsible for the event than men,
and hence they should not be employed in public
offices

working environment.

The interim nuclear accord between Iran and the
international community announced after tense negotiations
in Geneva, is historic for two reasons. The deal promises to
end Irans prolonged nuclear confrontation with the world,
strengthen the global non-proliferation regime and reduce
the dangers of war in the Middle East. Second, emerging from
secret talks between Washington and Tehran over the last
many months, the deal lays the foundation for a long overdue
rapprochement between America and Iran.
As it creates possibilities for new geopolitical equations
in a very critical region, the nuclear agreement has already
stirred a big backlash in the United States and the Middle
East hardliners and ideologues in America and Iran will accuse
their governments of giving away too many concessions.
Some of the predictable hostility is rooted in the
demonisation of each other over many decades. But a close
look at the terms of what is being called the first step nuclear
agreement suggests sensible give and take that would instil
mutual confidence and facilitate talks for a final resolution of
the nuclear dispute. For its part, Iran has agreed to freeze
some of the sensitive activities of its nuclear programme and
roll back others. Iran is now open to unprecedented
international inspections to verify its commitments under
the accord. The international community, in turn, has given
modest relief from the massive sanctions regime that has
been constructed in recent years against Iran. To be sure,
the terms of the deal are reversible in practice. The deal,
however, opens the door to a comprehensive settlement
which would ensure that Irans nuclear programme remains
peaceful, in return for an end to the international economic
blockade against Tehran.
Time is of the essence for Irans President Hassan
Rouhani, who is acutely aware that the present window of
political opportunity at home to negotiate with the US will
not last too long. President Barack Obama is under fire
from Israel and the Gulf Arab states, especially Saudi Arabia,
who fear that a US-Iran detente will make them vulnerable
to Tehrans rising regional clout. Meanwhile, the US
Congress threatens to undermine the deal by pushing for
more sanctions against Iran. As Obama and Rouhani move
forward in a political minefield, India has a major
opportunity to raise its diplomatic profile in the region,
where it has so much at stake. Delhi, which has welcomed
the nuclear deal, must step up its engagement with all the
major players in the region, for the Middle East will not be
the same as the prospects for Irans reconciliation with
America improve.
63. What has Iran agreed to do as per the recent nuclear
agreement? Give your answer in the context of the
given passage.
1) Iran has agreed to dismantle all its nuclear arsenals.
