UNIT 8 COMBINATORICS AND PROBABILITY

Binomial Probability
(Homework 9)
1. If a binomial random variable X has n=12 and p=0.50, find P(8).
2. A binomial random variable X has n=25 and p=0.30,
(a) Compute the expected value and variance of the random variable X.
(b)Find P(2)
3. Find the probability of passing a true-false test of 100 questions if 65% is
passing and all responses are random guesses. Also, what is the expected
score on the test using such a strategy?

4. A certain seed has a 75% germination rate. If 50,000 seeds are planted,
find the probability that more than 37,400 will germinate.

5. An engine on a light aircraft has a 99.9% chance of completing a flight

without failure. Find the probability that of 6000 flights, there are more
than ten engine failures. (Assume all the aircrafts have one engine.)

6. The IRS finds that of all taxpayers whose returns are audited, 70% end
up paying additional taxes. Find the probability that of 500 randomly
selected returns, at least 400 end up paying additional taxes.

7. (a) Find the probability of getting at least 60 boys in 100 births.

(b) Out of 100 births, the mean number of boys is clearly 50. What is the
standard deviation?
8. Twenty-five percent of teachers in MCPS are under 32 years of age.
What is the probability that among the 120 teachers at RM, fewer than
15 are under 32 years of age? Given MCPS data, do you feel that the RM
sample represents the MCPS population?

9. A census report indicated that 60% of the men between the ages of 18
and 24 live at home. What is the probability that 4 of your six male
college-aged friends live at home?

10. Twenty-five dice are rolled at once. What is the chance that five dice
show a one? What is the chance of fewer than five dice showing a one?

11. Consider the triangular region below. Let the probability p be the
chance of randomly selecting a point in the shaded portion.
(a) Find the value of p.

(b)Suppose
40
points
are
randomly chosen from the
region. Let X be the number
of points that fall in the

shaded area. Compute E(X)

and Var(X).

(c) Again, if 40 points are randomly chosen from the region, what is the
probability that exactly 15 are in the shaded area?
