Curing cancer with genetically modifed viruses.

Since the start of the 20

th
century there has be no real
big advancements in cancer research .In 2011 331,000
eole died of cancer though the survival rate has
increased there is still no guarantee of living if you have
the disease. !lso in recent years viral gene theray has
become a lot more advanced and now eole can have
a high chance of being cured .I believes that there is a
way to use gene theray to cure cancer.
"iral gene theray
#he basic idea of viral gene theray is lacing a gene or
genes in to a virus .$ou then culture them then imlant
them in to a human. #he virus then attaches itself to a
%bro&en cell' (a cell that roduces a wrong rotein
because the gene is damaged) then gives the bro&en
cell the correct genes. #he correct gene then relaces
the damaged gene. #he daughter cells then have the
correct gene so the erson is cured*
Cancer
Cancer is a disease where a strand or even a coule of
letters bra&e and then the cell evades the self+destruct
mechanisms and reroduces uncontrollably and doesn't
follow the normal cell cycle. #hen the cells turn in to a
tumour that then can be destroyed or surgically
removed.
Chemotheray
Chemotheray is where you ta&e a drug that &ills all
fast growing cells .Chemotheray is ,uite e-ective but
you lose your hair and other fast growing cells. !lso it
can sometimes be unresonsive so cancer cells will still
reroduce. #his means that the tumour can &ill the
atient.
.adiotheray
.adiotheray involves fring /+rays or gamma rays to
hit and &ill the cancer cells. .adiotheray can &ill lots of
good cells around the cancer cells. !lso the cells can be
damaged and turn into cancer cells. !lso the rays can't
hit some laces in the human body because the organ
is too delicate.
Surgery
Surgery is the same as normal surgery where you are
removing, relacing or adding something. Surgery also
is very e-ective but only if it is a big enough, if it isn0t
very big (only a few cells) surgery won0t wor&. In a few
vital organs the ris& is 1ust too high to do it.
2anoarticles
2anoarticles will (when fully develoed) go assed the
heathy cells and then when inside the cancer cell
release the genes that would destroy the cancer cell.
2anoarticles are not yet in ractice and only a
theoretical treatment. #hat is its roblem because you
can't treat anything with something that doesn't e/ist.
#ranslant
! translant is where someone is given an organ from
someone else's body. #he roblem with translants is
that it can be very hard to fnd matches. #hen if you do
fnd a donor that is a match your body will still thin& it
is an enemy and then start attac&ing it. 3ue to this
eole have to ta&e drugs that sto the immune
system from &illing the organ however the drug
wea&ens the immune system so eole are more
suscetible to simle diseases li&e the common cold.
#he basic idea.
If you add genes to the virus then add them to the
cancer cell. #he cancer cell would (with the correct
genes) die or be destroyed. !lso if it reroduces the
daughter cells will have the genes that would roduce
the roteins4en5ymes that would &ill or destroy the cell.
#his is a lot li&e the nanoarticles but the viral gene
theray would ta&e a lot less time and resources to fully
develo the cure. It has been roven that it could wor&
by 6eeds 7niversity, when in !ril 2010 they modifed
viruses hunt and destroy cancer cells. 3i-erent viruses
would be used for di-erent tissues in the body.
#umour destruction
8nce inside, the roteins4en5ymes then will get made.
!fter this haens the cancer cell will be destroyed by
either the 9:3 and ch&1 rotein or the en5yme from the
6$; gene. !lso the <I.2361 gene would send #+cells to
attac& the tumour.
#umour revention
E4BP4
TP53
KIR2DL1
OPI22 MK2
22935 bp
=e wouldn't need any treatments if we couldn't get
cancer in the frst lace .=e could accomlish this by
genetically modifying viruses to destroy the cancerous
cells before they got to multily and create a tumour.
#he genes I selected were #9:3, <I.2361 and
>?@9?.#he genes are the same to a certain e/tent as
there is not the ch&1 or ly5 genes .@ut in their lace is
the >?@9? gene is gene creates a cell that is secifcally
designed to &ill cancer cells.
"irus delivery in to the body
#here are many ways to get the virus in the body to
attac& the cancer cells. I thought of some ways to treat
secifc tyes of cancer that otherwise would be hard to
treat.
Aas
#he gas would be used for eole with lung cancer .If
the erson had cancer in a secifc area a thin tube
would be sent down the trachea and in to the bronchi.
!lso the virus would be &et in an o/ygen tan& in a
refrigerated container.
Cream
#he cream would obviously be used for s&in cancer .#he
cream would be mi/ed with viruses from a syringe .#he
cream will again be &et in a refrigerated container to
ma&e sure the viruses are alive to deliver the ayload
of genes.
Syringe
"iruses will be &et in a li,uid made u of sugars and
harmless bacteria to &ee the viruses alive. =hen
entered the bacteria would be &illed by the #+cells but
the viruses would live on to infect the cancer cells. #he
viruses would be used to treat mainly leu&aemia but it
can be used on other of cancers such as uterus and
breast cancer .It could also sto the metastasis of the
cancer to other arts in the body reventing the cancer
from being terminal.
9ill
#he ill would be flled with the same li,uid as the
syringe .It would enter the body with the meal and then
after 3 hours the food would leave the stomach and go
through to the liver guts and intestines. In the liver the
ills inner casing would be dissolved and the li,uid with
the viruses would be e/osed the viruses would then
infect the cancer in the liver.
Conclusion
#o conclude genetically modifed viruses would wor&
eBciently and a-ordably to sto cancer from ta&ing
more lives. #he viruses would wor& better than any
other current cancer treatment. #here still maybe a
little e/tra develoment needed but all treatments to
any disease, disorder and condition do.
