A hurricane is a large storm that forms on warm


bodies of water.
Hurricanes usually last for more than a week.
Can be up to 600 miles across.
Moves 10-20 miles an hour over the open ocean
Evaporation from seawater increases the
hurricanes power.
5 Categories
Category 1: Winds 74-95 mph
Category 2: Winds 96-110 mph
Category 3: Winds 111-130 mph
Category 4: Winds 131-155 mph
Category 5: Winds more than 155 mph
These 5 categories classify hurricanes.
The rainfall that comes with hurricanes can
cause a flood.
Can cause a tornado to form.
The amount of money that the government has to
pay for damages.
Peoples homes, lifes, ect. is taken away.
The word hurricane comes from the Taino
Native American word, hurucane, which means
evil spirit of the wind.
A typical hurricane can dump up to 6 in. of rain
on a region.
Only hurricanes with names are classified as
weather disasters.
The 1st hurricane of the year is given a name that
starts with the letter a.
A large hurricane releases the energy of 10
atomic bombs every second.
Jupiter has a hurricane that has been going for
300 years.
The Great Galveston Hurricane- Texas, 1900,
Category 4, and 8000 deaths.
Lake Okeechobee- Florida, 1928, Category 4, and
2500 deaths.
Hurricane Katrina- (GA, FL, MS, LA, AL), 2005,
Category 3, and 1200 deaths.
Hurricanes are most common in the Pacific
Ocean, the Western part of the Pacific is the
most active.
Also can form in the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal,
and the Arabian Sea.
Tropical Cyclones happen in the Indian Ocean.
1) Warm moist air over the ocean rises in the low
pressure area, the cold air above replaces it.
2) The air pressure drops and there are winds up to
38 mph.
3) When the winds go from 39 to 73 mph it is called
a tropical storm. It becomes a hurricane when
winds go over 73 mph.
Warm water and Warm moist air cause a
hurricane to happen.
People dying and buildings being destroyed is
the effect of a hurricane.
The effects of a hurricane can be very costly and
can kill many many people.

Eastern Pacific- May 15 to November 30
Western Pacific- July 1 to November 30
Southern Pacific- October 15 to May 15
Northern Indian Ocean- April 1 to December 31
Southern Indian Ocean- October 15 to Nov. 31
