The Great Galveston Hurricane- Texas, 1900, Category 4, and 8000 deaths. Lake Okeechobee- Florida, 1928, Category 4, and 2500 deaths. Hurricane Katrina- (GA, FL, MS, LA, AL), 2005, Category 3, and 1200 deaths. Hurricanes are most common in the Pacific Ocean, the Western part of the Pacific is the most active. Also can form in the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea. Tropical Cyclones happen in the Indian Ocean. 1) Warm moist air over the ocean rises in the low pressure area, the cold air above replaces it. 2) The air pressure drops and there are winds up to 38 mph. 3) When the winds go from 39 to 73 mph it is called a tropical storm. It becomes a hurricane when winds go over 73 mph. Warm water and Warm moist air cause a hurricane to happen. People dying and buildings being destroyed is the effect of a hurricane. The effects of a hurricane can be very costly and can kill many many people.
