IPPsolar (www.IPPsolar.com ) is a vertically integrated solar company that manufactures solar panels
and builds solar power plants.
New York City is facing enormous challenges to be a leader in solar and other alternative energy
sources. The growth of solar in the US is very much based on Federal and State incentives because
without the incentives solar electricity is too expensive to deploy. Unfortunately NY state does not have
attractive enough incentives to encourage significant growth of solar. Thus, NY state is trailing far
behind Californian and New Jersey where there is the highest number of kilowatt per square foot of
installed solar systems.
Therefore New York needs to take some measures of its own if it wants to compete with Shanghai,
which is its direct competitor in this race. There are today very large factories outside Shanghai that
manufacture several gigawatts of solar panels every year. Those enormous quantities can power several
cities. The Exxon Mobiles of the 21st century are being born right now outside Shanghai and New York
is nowhere to be found in this race. We are at a big risk of losing our top spot as the financial center of
the world.
New York can take practical measures to show its commitment. For instance, all government buildings
should go green and deploy TV screens in their public areas showing how much of the building’s
electricity is coming from the sun. In addition, the city should give more aggressive tax benefits to
those who adopt renewable energy. Today, New York’s citizens are still not as conscious about the
environment as in other cities like Paris or London.
This serious issue needs to be addressed at the City level and at the State level.
