Module 2: Effective Teaching
Introduction
When learning about education and the roles and responsibilities of a teacher in the
classroom, it is important to relate those lessons to competencies, which gives teachers an
understanding of why these lessons are important to prepare educators for the classroom
environment.
Planning for Learning
Planning for Learning is a chapter that explains the importance of planning curricula and
lessons in order to facilitate the learning experience. The chapter explains the planning model,
how it can be used as teachers plan, how teachers integrate unit, long-term, and lesson planning,
and the use of interdisciplinary and thematic units in planning end curricula. Competency Three
is a valuable competency to consider when learning about the materials in the Planning for
Learning chapter. This competency addresses the need to evaluate lessons and curricula as it
relates to state educational guidelines, ensuring the lesson is the appropriate difficulty, and that
students have the necessary prerequisite skills to accomplish it. In this way, teachers can ensure
that lesson plans are effective not only in teaching the educational objectives, but in the larger
context of the academic year.

Effective Teaching
The Effective Teaching chapter addresses the teaching experience in order to ensure that
educators help facilitate the learning process in the best way possible. The chapter examines the
role of classroom climate factors on the learning environment, what teacher characteristics
increase learning and motivation, how teachers can use time effectively, and the role of the
teacher throughout lessons to guide learning and accomplish educational objectives.
Competency four is particularly relevant to the Effective Teaching chapter because it addresses
the factors that impact a learners experience during lessons. When participating in the teaching
process, educators should take these factors into consideration to ensure their teaching process is
effective for all students regardless of their background experiences, skill levels, and engagement
level.
Increasing Learning through Student Involvement
Increasing Learning through Student Involvement examines the role of a teacher in
motivating students to learn. The chapter begins with an explanation of why involvement is
essential for the learning process, then moves to describing how teachers can use questions to
motivate students and what makes questions effective. The chapter ends with a section
explaining how different elements of teachers questions impact their effectiveness. Increasing
Learning through Student Involvement relates well to competency eight. This is because this
competency addresses the need for students to be engaged in the lesson, which can easily be
done through effective questioning.

Conclusion
Relating what is being learned to competencies not only ensures that educators
understand the reasoning behind why they teach in certain ways, but helps them remember the
lessons in order to more easily integrate them into the classroom. When looking at Module 2:
Chapters 4, 5 and 6, as well as competencies 3, 4 and 8, I have learned that the teaching process
of a lesson must be carefully considered from beginning to end. Careful lesson-planning, which
assesses the objectives and methods for instruction, the way teachers instruct students in the
classroom, and finding ways to engage students during the lessons, can facilitate more effective
learning and ensure that students get the most they can out of the lessons taught.
