1 Thessalonians 3

Vss 1-5 :: Paul is very concerned over the state of the Thessalonians faith as they are
experiencing persecution (even though they knew it was going to happen! vss. 3&4);
He mentions twice that he could bear the uncertainty no longer (vss. 1&5). What
is Paul afraid will happen?
Who does Paul say brings on affliction? (vs. 5) Note what the Lord Jesus said
was a possible result of persecution (Matt 13:20-21).
What did Paul do to remedy the situation? (vs.2)
What does it mean to establish someone in their faith? How is this done? To
exhort them in faith? How has this been done for you?
The bible teaches that God has chosen (elected) those who believe. An improper
understanding of this teaching though, can lead us to think and act fatalistically
about our brothers and sisters condition before God. Paul says in 1:4 that he
knows the Thessalonians were elect, yet did he regard their salvation and
perseverance as a foregone conclusion?
What is our responsibility to our brothers and sisters in faith in light of this?

Vss. 6-9 :: Notice how Paul responds to the good news about the Thessalonians!
He responds this way even though he knows they have not reached the finish
line yet. Ought we to wait until results are sure to thank God and express our
joy?

Vss. 10-13 :: This is in essence a prayer, or the content of a prayer.
Note what Paul prays for: does he pray for God to supply what is lacking in the
Thessalonians faith? (see also vs.2)
What are the things he does ask of God?
What does Paul indicate is required in order for our hearts to be established
blameless in holiness at Christs coming? Why doesnt he mention faith here?
