Discuss the demographics of your school. Use the school report card or CCSD websites or other state websites.

Talk about poverty, ethnicity, culture and how your students seem to learn best. What are their learning
strengths? Does your school build on these strengths or does one size of instruction fit all? What do you do in
your classroom to meet the needs of all?

At the school where I completed my student teaching and continue to volunteer there are a
total of 629 students. Of those students 341 are male and 288 are female. 77.3% of the student
population is Hispanic and 12.4% is White. African American students account for 6.2% of the
student population and the remaining 3.7% of the student population is classified as Asian/Pacific
Islander. 70.9% of the student population at Rose Warren Empowerment School qualifies for Free or
Reduced Lunch and 54.4% of the student population have limited English proficiency.
As demonstrated by the demographics the Hispanic culture makes up the majority of the
student population at this school and for many of the students English is their second language. A
large number of the parents do not speak English or are very limited on the English they do speak. As
a result, the school has set up a program for parents to help teach parents English and we always
make sure to translate papers that are sent home so that the parents remain involved.
As for the students, most them learn best with hands-on lessons. The students work well in
groups and on projects. In the multi-age classroom we use groups a lot and this helps with some of the
students who are still struggling with English by paring them with students who are bilingual and can help
translate. Since I have 3 grade levels in my classroom it is important to use a variety of instruction to
target the different grade levels as well as the different needs of the students.
Rose Warren is a school the highlights and celebrates all the different cultures of the
students. During morning ceremonies we will have different cultural dances that family members or
students ask to perform. The school overall is very diverse in its instruction because it is an
Empowerment School. The schools extra funding allows for each class to have laptops and smart
boards. We use technology every day and have many different tools to help the students excel and
experience things they may not get to at home since the majority of the students come from low
income families.
