-I will discuss how the concepts of variability and prominence can be used in our context of Lee
Myung Bak.
-First, let me do a short recap. There has been several sabotaging incidents staged by the Founder's
son, which later results in the confrontation between Lee and the son.
-We can see that there are two roles that Lee can play in this confrontation-the first being an CEO,
and the other being an outsider. And, there are different set of skills that are associated with the
different roles. For a CEO, the skills involved is to be assertive, while for an outsider, it is to be
sympathetic.
-Lee can be sympathetic in this situation because he understands the sense of unhappiness and
sadness that the son is facing, and thus, Lee can approach the situation in a mild and soft manner.
-On the other hand, Lee can be assertive. In order to bring his point across to the son, Lee can be
harsh and scold the son off in a very straightforward manner.
-Thus, we can see that there is a conflict between the roles involved, primarily due to the different
set of skills associated with each of it. This conflict in roles gives rise to the variability in roles.
-Next, we can see that given these two roles, Lee have to choose one of this role in this
confrontation. So what did Lee Myung Bak do? As taken from a short passage in Lee's Autobiography
,Lee said the following to the son during the confrontation "You have one job and that is to follow
whatever I say as president. If you are not happy, I suggest you move to a different company " , it is
clear from the contents of this conversation that Lee is being very assertive. This thus shows that Lee
takes on the role of a CEO.
-Therefore, it is evident how prominence is used in our context. Given different set of roles that a
person can portray, one of the roles will take priority over others. This prioritized role is said to be
prominent over other roles and in our context, the role of Lee being a CEO takes prominence over
others.
