Photo Write 10/27/14: Portrait Photography
Portrait photography is the photography of people that usually expresses
human emotion. The types of portrait photography can be divided into three
categories with further subcategories: subject, number of people, and frame/shot.
The subcategories for the basis of subject are candid portrait photography where
the subject is possibly unaware the photograph is being taken to create a natural
picture, posed portrait photography is where the subject poses for the picture, and
an environmental portrait focuses on the relation of the subject with their
environment (more dominant than facial expression). The subcategories for the
basis of the number of people are individual, couple, and group (portray feelings of
unity) portraits. The subcategories for the basis of the shot/frame are close-ups,
facial shots, upper body shots, and full body portraits.
