Experiment 7

PSK Modulation and Demodulation

7.1 Objective

To build and test a PSK modulator and demodulator circuits.

7.2 Equipment

Power Supply
Function Generator
Oscilloscope
Frequency Counter
Digital Multimeter

7.3 Procedure

Part A- Pseudo Random Bit Sequence Generator

1- Build the 3 bit random sequence generator circuit shown in figure 7.1.
2- Obtain the clock from the Digital Communications Board. Set the clock to
4kHz.
3- If the random sequence does not start automatically or stops by itself, you
can restart it by momentarily touching the input of the first shift register
(pin 2 of the 74295) with +5V supply.
4- Record your results.

Supplies: 7486 (14) +5V, (7) Gnd.
74295 (14) +5V, (7) Gnd.

Part B- PSK Modulator

Figure 7.2 PSK modulator.

1- Build the PSK modulator circuit in figure 7.2. Set the Function Generator (FG)
to 0.2V
PP
at 5.25kHz before connecting it to the circuit.
2- Connect the PRBS signal to the input of the PSK modulator.
3- Record your results.

Part C- PSK Demodulator

1. Build the PSK demodulator circuit in figure 7.3.
2. Connect the output of the modulator to the input of the demodulator.
3. Record your results.

7.4 Questions

1- Why were the following components used:
A- LM339.
B- TL074.
2- Verify the choice of the 3.9k and 22n in the demodulator.
3- Suggest another method to demodulate the PSK signal. Include main
component values.
4- Convert the previous circuits into block diagrams.
