    India's balance of payments indicators show that for the period of April 2008-March 2009, merchandise exports grew by 5.4% while imports grew by 14.3%. This led to a trade deficit of $119.4 billion which was partially offset by a net invisibles surplus of $89.6 billion. The current account deficit for this period was $29.8 billion, which was met by strong gross capital inflows of $302.5 billion resulting in net capital flows of $9.1 billion. Foreign direct investment accounted for 191.3% of net capital flows.
