Meeting the AITSL Standards

(This is ongoing Each AITSL Standard will eventually have its own table)
1. AITSL Standard One
Know Students and how
they learn
1.1 Demonstrate knowledge
and understanding of
physical, social and
intellectual development and
characteristics of students
and how these may affect
learning.
During my first placement, I spent the 1-3 days on getting to know
the children and their learning needs. I did this by interacting with
them, and speaking to staff. The knowledge on the children helped
me plan and conduct my two supervised lessons with the children.
This is because I was able to assist the children during my activity
that needed more help. Understanding the childrens physical, social
and intellectually development, greatly affected my lessons (in a
positive manner), because I was able to implement 2 great activities
that was enjoyable for everyone who participated.
2. AITSL Standard Two
Know Content and How to
Teach it
2.1 Demonstrate knowledge
and understanding of the
concepts, substance, and
structure of the content and
teaching strategies of the
teaching area.
During both my first and second placements, I had to create and
implement a minimum of two lessons (activities). For all of the
activities I implemented, each one of them had an aim, for
example, improve motor skills. This meant I had to research
activities that would achieve my aim. Thus, demonstrating my
knowledge of the aim of the concept. The teaching strategy I chose
to do was a play-based activity, because the children were 0-5
years old.
3. AITSL Standard Three
Plan for and Implement
Effective Teaching and
Learning
3.1 Set learning goals that
provide achievable
challenges for students of
varying abilities and
characteristics.
During my placements, I would talk to the staff that was in the room
(for example the Nursery room). I would ask them about activity
suggestions, which they thought would greatly benefit the children
in the room. With their assistance, I created and implemented
successful activities that were challenging, yet still achievable.
4. AITSL Standard Four
Create and Maintain
Supportive and Safe
Learning Environments
4.1 Identify strategies to
support inclusive student
participation and engagement
in classroom activities.
Throughout my placements I have learnt various teaching strategies
that support inclusive student participation and engagement in
classroom activities.
5. AITSL Standard Five
Assess, Provide Feedback
and Report on Student
Learning.
5.1 Demonstrate
understanding of a range of
strategies for reporting to
students and parents/carers
and the purpose of keeping
accurate and reliable records
of student achievement.
During both of my placements, I would introduce myself to the
parents/carers and let them know why I was at the Early Learning
Centre, and talk about how I was going to do activities with the
children. Before I implemented my activities, I had to get
permission from the parents/carers to allow me to take photos of
their child. This was good because I got to speak to the
parents/carers (by then I knew what activity I was going to). Once I
had done the activities, I would then let the parents know how their
child went.
6. AITSL Standard Six
Engage in Professional
Learning
6.1 Demonstrate an
understanding of the role of
the Australian Professional
Standards for Teachers in
identifying professional
learning needs.
To further my learning I completed the online Self Assessment tool
assist me in identifying areas of the Professional Teaching
Standards which I needed to work on.
7. AITSL Standard Seven
Engage Professional with
Colleagues, Parents/Carers
and the Community
7.1 Understand and apply the
key principles described in
codes of ethics and conduct
for the teaching profession.
During both of my placements, my mentor commented on how I
conducted myself very well, and she included this in the letter she
wrote about me during my placement.
