Budding
Process by which a new, duplicate plant or
animal begins to form at the side of the
parent and enlarges until an individual is
created.
Example: Very common in plants, hydra

Regeneration in Planarian, roundworms ( if
aortic-heart arches are intact), starfish and moss.

Talk to your partner:
1. What are 4 types of asexual
reproduction.
2. What is the difference between
budding and binary fission?
Sexual Reproduction
Requires two sex cells egg and sperm (one
female and one male sex cell)
The egg and sperm join to form an entirely
new organism
Different from the parent organism
Examples of : External Fertilization,
Internal Fertilization
External Fertilization
When sex cells join outside an organism.
Examples : Frogs
+ large chance of evolution (change)
occurring
- Have to find the mate

External Fertilization

Internal Fertilization
Where egg and sperm come together inside
one organisms reproductive system.
Example: Humans, dogs, cats, hamsters,
snakes, chickens
+ Adapt to new environmental conditions
- Takes a long time
Imagine
Imagine that a particular organism within a
species lacks a certain gene (or ability to
express a certain gene) necessary to
break down a specific type of food, yet
others of the same species within the
population are able to break down that
food.
What happens if the uncertain or less
favorable conditions lead to that being
the primary food source?
Death
The parent organism and all of their
offspring produced through asexually
would die!

But, with the genetic diversity that comes
from sexual reproduction the possibility of
the offspring surviving is enhanced.

each image and sexual or asexual
reproduction.

Sexual Reproduction
Advantages
Disadvantages
Involves 2 parents
Large chance of
evolution
Species will be able to
adapt to new environment
New character is formed
Reduce the chance of
passing diseases
Half of the population is
capable of development
Finding a mate
Long time
No guarantee that an
offspring would be born
Asexual Reproduction
Advantages
Disadvantages
One parent is needed
Large guarantee that
offspring would be born
Short period
Genetic material need not
to be produced
No fertilization
More reliable because
fewer steps so less can go
wrong

No chance of an evolution
taking place
Disease and bad qualities
are passed down to offspring
Plants will struggle with
resources (light, space,
nutrient and soil) so most
plants will remain less
healthy.
Sexual and Asexual
Assessment
1. Which type of reproduction involves 2 parents?
2. Which type of reproduction gives you uniform
offspring?
