Module 3- Vocabulary

1. Video Editing- the process of editing segments of motion video production footage,
special effects and sound recordings in the post-production process.
2. Linear Editing- is a video editing post-production process of selecting, arranging and modifying
images and sound in a predetermined, ordered sequence.
3. Non-Linear Editing- is a video (NLVE) or audio editing (NLAE) digital audio workstation
(DAW) system that performs non-destructive editing on source material.
4. SMPTE- (The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) is an internationally-
recognized standards developing organization.
5. Vectors- the image is described as a series of mathematical equations. To draw a bitmap
shape you just color in a block of pixels; with vector graphics, you would describe the
shape in terms of height, width, radius, and so on.
6. Transition- can be an instant scene or image change, a fade, fade to black, dissolve, pan
from one person to another, or any digital effect.
7. In-point- the start of a frame where you begin an edit.
8. Out-point-a term used to describe the end point of an edit.
9. MPEG- an international standard for encoding and compressing video images.
10. NTSC- The television broadcasting system used in North America and Japan.
11. Frame Rate- frequency at which frames in a television picture, film, or video sequence
are displayed.
12. Render- process of adding realism
13. Continuity- maintenance of continuous action and self-consistent detail in the various
scenes of a movie or broadcast.
14. Cross-Cutting- alternate (one sequence) with another when editing a movie
15. Cut- an act of cutting, in particular.
16. Cutaways- the interruption of a continuously filmed action by inserting a view of something
else
17. Cross Dissolve- a gradual transition from one image to another.
18. Establishing Shot- establishes the setting of a scene.
19. Fade In- an image is made to appear gradually or the volume of sound is gradually
increased from zero.
20. Fade out- an image is made to disappear gradually or the sound volume is gradually
decreased to zero.
21. Jump Cut- an abrupt transition from one scene to another.
22. B-Roll- extra footage captured to enrich the story you're telling and to have greater
flexibility when editing
23. A-Roll-primary footage of video being used on the multimedia video
24. Digtal Compression- method of reducing the number of bits (zeros and ones) in a digital
signal by using mathematical algorithms to eliminate redundant information.
