In this flow chart I first determine the differences between the groups, by identifying how many

groups are being analyzed. Then I determine whether the variables fit into a dependent or independent
sample (Yellow boxes), by asking if the groups are related or not. Then I figure out what type of
measurement is the dependent variable (Green boxes) which will determine my test. I understand that I
CANNOT answer questions about relationships with this flow chart.

Question 1) Is there a difference between the gender of students and their temperatures taken at
Guilford Colleges campus Health Fair?
Independent Variable= Gender
Dependent Variable= Temperature taken at Guilford College campus Health Fair
Given that the dependent variable (gender) consists of two groups (male and female) it is
accurately classified as a binary. I followed the chart from the Are the differences between groups
significances? down to the two groups box. I then tracked the chart to the Independent samples
box because two groups (males and females) are unrelated. Because body temperature is an interval
variable, I followed the chart down to the interval box, which signified that I should use an
independent sample t-test.
Question 2) Are there any differences in reported blood pressures of Guilford College students before
and after their last final exam?
Independent Variable= Reported results before and blood pressure after
Dependent Variable= Blood pressure
Given that the results were collected at two different times (before and after) I tracked the chart
to the two groups box. Then, I followed the chart to the dependent samples box (because the
groups were repeated measure) before tracking it to the interval box. This was because the
dependent variable which was the blood pressure recorded is an interval variable. This then signified
that a paired samples t-test should be used.
Question 3) The faculty at Guilford College were separated into three different categories/levels based
upon their years of employment at the college: 0-5 years, 6-10 years, and 11 and up. Is there any
correlation between their yearly salary and their levels of employment?
Independent Variable = Level of Employment
Dependent Variable = Yearly Salary
I followed from the Are the differences between the groups significant box to the three or
more groups box, which describes the independent variable (Level of employment). From this box I
followed down to the 1 dv box (yearly salary). Because there is only one dependent variable, this
signifies that I should use the 1-way ANOVA test to determine the difference between groups.
