I worked on the crew for several concerts during

the second semester of my freshman year. Two of these astounding concerts

include the Senior Jazz Concert and the New Music Concert. Initially, for the
Senior Jazz Concert, I was placed in the Sound Crew under the leadership of
Luis Castillo, who I have since become the apprentice of in audio engineering
and computer technology. Luis placed me as second-in-command assistant
of using the state-of-the-art soundboard. In addition to learning the
soundboard, I set up various microphones in optimal locations to get vibrant
audio. Consequently, I performed countless microphone checks, adjusting
cable connections and equalizer levels in order to achieve flawless sound.
Lastly, I set up the chairs for the musicians to sit on so that they appeared
visually appealing.

I had learned the fundamentals of working on the sound crew for the
Jazz Concert. I was able to demonstrate my leadership of audio expertise for
LaGuardias New Music concert, a two-part performance respectively
featuring LaGuardias symphonic band and innovative groups of musicians
taking a course known as New Music. I was again placed in the Sound Crew
under Luis Castillos guidance. Not only did I repeat the tasks I had done for
the Jazz Concert, but I assisted in setting up the instruments and amplifiers
backstage, and connecting them into the sound system. Suddenly, a com had
malfunctioned. This terribly affected our communication between students
throughout the beginning of the show, and I solely volunteered to locate and
resolve the problem. When I had finally repaired the malfunction, a verbal
miscommunication between the music director and the tech department
occurred, and I resolved the issue between them. There was a lot of running
around involved, locating various people of different positions and sharing
messages between them. When I had finally sorted out every last error, I was
asked to assist upperclassman Max Schaffer in working the light board. The
artistic lighting for the New Music concert was very mind-blowing, and
inspired my creativity. The lighting changed color and pattern explosively
according to the mood and musical rhythm of the onstage performance.
