Kansas History 2014-15

Course Description: This is a 12 week course where students will explore Kansas geography,
civics, economics and history from pre-historic times to the present. In addition we will look at
current issues Kansas is facing. Students will be using writing skills, critical thinking skills as well
as digital skills to connect Kansas past to their own lives and future.
Course Objectives:
We will be using the Kansas Standards for History, Government and Social Studies
o Choices have consequences.
o Individuals have rights and responsibilities.
o Societies are shaped by beliefs, ideas, and diversity.
o Societies experience continuity and change over time.
o Relationships between people, places, ideas and environments are dynamic.
Course Materials:
Books: The Kansas Journey by Jennie Chinn loaned out from LVS
Articles: various articles will be assigned
Videos: videos may be placed on the website for students to view.
Blog: Students will be using EduBlogs.
Website: Students will be accessing information and assignments off the class website

Course Assignments: While there are no official due dates throughout the course, students are
expected to begin work in the course in November 2014 and complete work regularly until they
complete all 12 chapters. Written assignments will be emailed to Mrs. Hett via her gmail
account listed above. That includes chapter tests. Blog assignments will be completed on the
EduBlogs site. All work must be completed by March 2015 and the textbook will need to be
returned to Lawrence Virtual School.
Course Communication: Communication is critical and I welcome questions regarding the
content and assignments. During the workday I am constantly checking my Kmail, so that is the
best method for sending me a message. You can call and if I dont answer please leave a
message. I do not typically check my messages (kmail, email or phone) after 5pm during the
week or anytime on the weekends. Please allow 24 hours during the workweek and 48 hours on
the weekends for a response.

Week 4 Dec. 1-5 Chapter 4
Week 5 Dec. 8-12 Chapter 5
Week 6 Dec. 15-19 Chapter 6
Week 7 Jan. 5-9 Chapter 7
Week 8 Jan. 12-16 Chapter 8
Week 9 Jan. 19-23 Chapter 9
Week 10 Jan. 26-30 Chapter 10
Week 11 Feb. 2-6 Chapter 11
Week 12 Feb. 9-13 Chapter 12
Extra week if needed Feb. 16-20
Recommended Weekly Schedule:
Monday complete the textbook readings
Tuesday check out the internet resources and words to know
Wednesday Complete the blog reading and writing assignment
Thursday Complete the worksheets and attend the KS History session through Class

Friday Complete the Chapter Exam
