Ethan McGuinness, Matt Cabral 1. Engineering Design Central Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign. Identify the problem
Research the problem Develop solutions Select the best solution Construct a prototype
Test and evaluate
Communicate the solutions Redesign Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 1 Identify the problem
The original problem was that we needed to make our robot be able to follow a line. what we needed to was have sensor on our robot and make it follow that line.
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Step 2 Research the problem Explore other options via the internet Student: List the internet sites that were helpful. Site 1. Mr.CrokesRobotics.weebly.com Site 2_____________________ Site 3 _____________________
What did you learn from your research? A. we learned how to program the robot and do other things to make it work. B. learned how to build robot in the way we needed it to. C ______________________
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Step 3 Develop solutions BRAINSTORM COLLABORATION Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below.
1.make sure that your robot is completed the way that you wanted it to be.
1.have robot be able to move fluently not enough to get by.
1. ____________________________________- Step 4 Select the best Possible solution(s) Design idea #1 Pro: we had what we needed to do what we were asked with all the materials that we needed. ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ Con: our design didnt work the first few times. so we had to improve a lot. until we got what we needed. ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Design idea #2 Pro: Had what we needed to do project correctly and finally did it. ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Con: had to go through many prototypes to get to the right robot. ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________
Design idea #3 Pro: our robot was able to run smoothly and safely without doing any physical damage. ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Con: took a long time to fix problems with our program. ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Step 5 Construct a prototype Student: Build a robot with your nxt lego kit Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Use the next slide(s) for your digital pictures of your prototypes.
If the robot fails the design must be modified and retested. Step 6 Test and evaluate If the robot fails the design must be modified and retested. * picture of your 1 st prototype* Does it work? Ye s Stop No Modify the robot retest Example Step 6 Test and evaluate If the robot fails the design must be modified and retested. * picture of your 2nd prototype* Does it work? Ye s Stop No Modify the robot retest Example Step 6 Test and evaluate If the robot fails the design must be modified and retested. * picture of your 3rd prototype* Does it work? Ye s Stop No Modify the robot retest Example Step 7 Communicate the solution(s)
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Provide the YouTube link of your video that shows how your robot meets the challenge.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6yHlLSMfas this is the video that shows our robot following the line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl-V6y1UsYY this is the video of the robot inside the box pushing the cups out the border. Redesign If you could do this over again what would you do differently? we would design the robot differently and more efficiently. If we could do this project over again we would want to make the robot smoother and more efficient to the to the job better instead of doing just enough to get the job done.
What did you learn? with this project we learned how to make a robot follow a line with a light sensor. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
