Description of event activities
he !olunteer "etwork are supporting #artha care in collecting donations and funding for the $harity&
#embers of the public are instructed to pay for a ticket stub, which ser%es as their donation to the charity&
he young people facepainting will then collect these ticket stubs as confirmation of payment and proceed
to face paint&
?nitially ? was gi%en assited by two %olunteers who put themsel%es forward as wanting to face paint, these
%olunteers were 6eclan and *pril& Aowe%er, ? asked for further %olunteers as there were not enough face
painters to keep up with the demand from the public& ? also encouraged other to facepaint but if they did not
want to they were able to act as stewards in preparing for the Zombie walk e%nt&
annaGs supported in facepainting as did =auren and $laire towards the end& ? feel that it is often beneficial
to ha%e our more e'perienced young %olunteers such as annas engage in the acti%ities as it encourages
the more inter%erted ones to also %olunteer as annas sets a good e'ample& #embers of staff such as
myself and *nna also helped when it was busy and as a positi%e demonstraion of getting stuck in&
#y role as team leader was to support the young people by collecting tickets, changing water, sharing out
facepaints, talking to members of the public, setting up and down&Aowe%er,my main priortiy was encouraging
the young adults in the good (ob that they were doing and encouraging them to interact with the public
appropriately
Fnce the face painting had finished we packed down and took part in the <ombie walk& ? encouraged the
young adults to take part in the <ombie walk and walked with them&aking part ga%e me an opportunity to
discuss feedback from facepainting as well as any further concerns or issues that they wished to discuss
valuation
? felt that the acti%ity was a success as the feedback from the young people was that they had en(oyed it&
he young adults said that they liked taking part in the <ombie walk as many had not taken part in an e%ent
like the Zombie walk before&
he facepainting allowed me to posti%ely encourage the young adults whilst being in an en%ironment in
which they de%eloped their social skills and interaction&?n particular with 6eclan ? discussed using positi%e
language as his lack of confidence meant that he e'pressed that he felt he was not any good,to the public&
Aowe%er with encouragement and discussion of how this could be a barrier in communication, his
confidence grew and he remained facepainting throughout the acti%ity& hrough supporting 6eclan and
promoting empowerment, ? was able to inform him of ptential barriers in communication and how to impro%e
this& 6eclan informed me that he didnDt like people or being in new social e%ents, both of which he had
achie%ed at the <ombie walk& ? was able to acknowledge this and promote confidence which will hopefully
encourage him to participate in future e%ents of situations which he initailly feels uncomforable in&
)am did nto wish to participate in the facepainting but was happy to helpp steward the <ombie walk& Ae
seemed to prefer practical tasks as he %olunteered to helo pack away etc& Ae was also in charge of a walkie
talkie and sen(oyed participating and leading int hsi sense& )am helped me take the table ack to the town
hall which ga%e me an opporutity to talk to him and discuss his inerests& ?n future sessions i would build on
this relationship in order to establish further interests and preferred learning style in ordert o utilise this to
promote )ams social and educational de%elopment
/ayleigh and *pril were young people that ? had met before, howe%er i had not spoken to them for a couple
of months so the e%ent and acti%ity ga%e me an opportunity to continue supporting them
*pril %olunteered to face paint after recei%ing praise for her own make up& *pril is Cuite creati%e and %ery
much into <ombie themed media& ;acepainting ga%e her an opportunity to e'press this& )he also has
interests in youth work int he futur so allowing her to lead and be a prominent part of the e%ent, ga%e her
confidence and e'perience in building e'perience rele%ant to future employment or de%eloping life skills
that can be used in future employment&
/ayleigh was keen to tel me how she had d e%eloped in abstaining form alcohol& )he had also returned to
another educational program with the %olunteer network so was continuing to seek educational and social
impro%ements and challenegds
#eedback on activit$
f said she would like more facepaints a%aliable in the future& *lthough i did bring e'tra facepaints which
were able to use, if repeating this acti%ity in future, i would bring more facepaints a%aliable from the
%olunteer network& 0oth 6eclan and *pril also feel that training in facepaitning would be beneficial&
#embers of the public started Cueing as soon as the we began setting up facepainting& hey had been
directed by martha care and we were busy in meeting demand& Aowe%er, future impori%ements would be for
the %olunteers to arri%e a little before we were signed up to the martha care stand as this would pro%ide us
with time to practice faceapitning& ?f it was particuarly a popular idea, the %olunteer network could offer a
half a day course added to their list of courses a%aliable&+'tra time would ha%e gi%en my more of an
opportunity to run a icebreaker game& ? had originally planned a icebreaker consisting of going around the
circle gi%ing each other halloween creepy names and naming a scary mo%ie&his would ha%e allowed me to
learn the young peoples names instead of introducing myself to them indi%idually and allowed them to learn
e%eryone else names& Aowe%er,such is the nature of %olunteering at e%ents, the group was split
immediately and reCuired to steward& ?n future ? think i will ask to (oin the young people before walking down
to the e%ent or meeting point&
his was a popular e%ent and i feel it has a great scope in the acti%ities that could be (oined to it before or
after ie facepainting class& ?t pro%ided young people with a new e'perience and one which intergarted them
with the wider community&
