Grade Math Course Syllabus

Course Description:

This course has been designed to meet the requirements found in the
Alabama Course of Study. This course focuses on the following five
content standard domains: Operation and Algebraic Thinking, Numbers
and Operations in Base Ten, Numbers and Operations Fractions,
Measurement and Data, and Geometry. The students will be engaged in a
variety of activities and learning situations, as well as incorporating the
Standards of Mathematical Practices in order to master each content
standard.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:
Write and interpret numerical expressions
Analyze patterns and relationships
Understand the place value system
Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with
decimals to the hundredths
Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and
division to multiply and divide fractions
Convert like measurement units within a given measurement
system
Represent and interpret data
Understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication
and to addition
Graph points on a coordinate plane to solve real-world and
mathematical problems
Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their
properties




Grading Procedures:

Grading in this course will be in accordance with Madison County Board
Policy. Test grades, which include exams, quizzes, Math-opedia, and
projects, are 50% of the grade. Daily grades, which include participation
points, class work, and Math4Today, are 40% and homework is 10% of the
grade. Any student who receives failing grades during this course is urged
to discuss this matter with the teacher.

Policies:

Attendance: Students are responsible for all materials presented in class,
including announcements about course procedures. Exams and
assignments often include questions on material presented only in class, so
performance on these indirectly reflects attendance.

Absences: It is the responsibility of the student to collect and turn in
missed work.

Accommodations: It is the policy of Moores Mill Intermediate School to
afford equal opportunity in education to qualified students. Parents and
students should direct requests for accommodations for this course and
any school event to the teacher. All guidelines as set forth in IDEA, Section
504, and ADA will be followed.

Behavior:

The discipline plan of the Madison County Board of Education will be followed as
outlined in the Student Code of Conduct handbook. No student will be allowed to
disrupt the learning environment of the classroom. There will be consequences
for misbehavior. In the event of serious or recurring problems, parents and/or
the principal will become involved. These rules and consequences are outlined in
the 5
th
Grade Discipline Plan.
