WHO HONOURED BANGLADESH AND TIMOR-LESTE FOR EXCELLENCE IN PUBLIC HEALTH
The World Health Organisation (WHO) honoured Bangladesh and Timor-Leste with South East Asia Regional Award for Excellence in Public Health. The newly instituted awards were presented to Saima Hossain of Bangladesh and National Malaria Control Programme of Timor-Leste in Dhaka on 10 September 2014. Saima Hossain was conferred the Award in the individual category for leadership in advancing the cause of Autism in South East Asia and worldwide. She is a chairperson of National Advisory Committee on Neuro development and Autism in the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of Bangladesh. The National Malaria Control Programme of Timor-Leste was conferred the Award in the region category for its aggressive anti- malaria effort which has drastically reduced malaria cases in Timor-Leste. 2. INDIA AND BANGLADESH SIGNED MOU IN THE FIELD OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINES India and Bangladesh on 9 September 2014 signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the field of traditional medicines and homeopathy. The MoU aims to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the health sector. The MoU was signed between the two countries on the sidelines of South-East Asia regional conference of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Dhaka where the traditional medicine was one of the major issues of discussion. The MoU was signed by Nilanjan Sanyal, Secretary, Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturapathy Unani, Siddhi and Homeopathy (AYUSH) on Indias behalf and M M Neazuddin, Health Secretary of Bangladesh. Main Highlights of the MoU The two sides agreed to exchange all kinds of traditional medicines alongside the experts and physicians for conducting training. Recognised institutions of both the countries would provide scholarships to each other in addition to setting up an academic chair. The agreement would benefit Bangladesh in the field of education and research of traditional systems of medicine as India is known for its rich ancient system of medicine called ayurveda. 3. Vintage Dakota aircraft was given as a gift to Bangladesh Air Force by Indian Air Force On 18th September 2014, Vintage Dakota aircraft was gifted to Bangladesh Air Force by Indian Air Force. Dakota aircraft was with the Indian Airforce at its museum. It was gifted after a formal request from Bangladesh Air Force. This vintage aircraft was received by Bangladesh Air Force chief Air Marshal Muhammad Enamul Bari at Palam. The Dakota aircraft is a transport aircraft which played a crucial role in liberation of Bangladesh. Do you know? Dakota was the first transport aircraft to be landed at the heights of 11500 feet in Leh. Legendary pilot Wing Commander Mehar Singh was the person to get it landed there.
4. UN Tribunal Fixes Maritime Border of India, Bangladesh Ending years of dispute over the maritime boundary between India and Bangladesh, a UN tribunal on July 8, 2014 announced that Bangladesh will get 19,467 sq km of the total 25,602 sq km disputed area with India in the Bay of Bengal. By a majority of four votes to one, the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Haque in the Netherlands determined the course of the maritime boundary line between Bangladesh and India in the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf within and beyond 200 nautical miles. In its verdict, the tribunal nuanimousy decided that it has jurisdiction to identify the land boundary terminus and to delimit the territorial sea, the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf between the parties within and beyond 200 nautical miles in the areas where the claims of the parties overlap.
