CHAPTER 4 COMPARISION OF SIMPLE AND BASE

ISOLATED STRUCTURE
Comparison of performance of simple an !ase isola"e s"r#c"#re
1. If we consider the simple structure then inertia forces accumulate downwards
from the top of the building, lower stories experience higher forces than upper
stories their for the lower storey failure first, and in base isolation forces are not
accumulate hence structure remain safe.
2. If beam are weaker than column than damages will first occur at beam which are
ductile enough and cause progressive damage, but in base isolation forces are not
accumulate hence structure remain safe.
3. The cracks at the end are diagonal tension cracks caused due to shear in !!
"uilding.
#. In !! building it is seen that beam column $oints are severally damaged in
earth%uake.
&. 'amage of stair case is ma$or cause in multistory building, can be prevented by
base isolation.
(. )any times water tanks are constructed at the roof level of the building. This may
lead to damage to tank due to inertia forces can be prevented by base isolation.
*. The failure occur because of cracking of infill walls, short column effect, can be
prevented by base isolation.
+. The beam damages due to improper detailing of reinforcement at $oint, can be
prevented by base isolation.
,. Improper spacing of lateral ties in columns lead to shear failure, can be prevented
by base isolation.
1-. .ome cases it has been found that structure fail due to failure of soft storey, can be
prevented by base isolation.
